Great uncle passed away - my Uncle took the 3 revolvers Uncle Stanley had, told me I could have the "broken" semi auto 22 that would not cock. Took it home, on Ruger website downloaded a manual and dis-assembled it. Anyway, when reassembled it works fine - ran 200 rounds of ammo through it without a problem. Issue though is top is LOOSE! The stop pin comes out, the barrel/reciever falls off the frame. Called Ruger - they emailed me a shipping label, so sent off yesterday to be tightened. Should arrive today, so am waiting to hear what they say when they receive.

welcome to the Forum, sorry to hear of your Uncles passing...nice for him to leave the family something to remember him by
As for the "looseness", can happen with any of them ,over time, I find that MOST of this is caused by folks just having to take them ALL apart, over and over and over again....as often noted, MORE damage is done to firearms from OVERCLEANING, if done improperly or carelessly...easy fix and you'll enjoy it when it comes back.

I am also sorry to hear about you're Uncle passing. The Mark IV will be an excellent pistol for you and you're living Uncle will be disappointed that he passed on the broken one when you receive it back.

Ruger will get it fixed right up. Very good customer service as you can probably already attest too. I sent a brand new Mark III back to Ruger last Wednesday (12-21-2016). Even with the Christmas and New Year Holidays I will receive it back on Tuesday (1-3-2017). Can't wait to get her back. Yours will be back at hand before you know it.

Would love a Mark 4 but as I live in the COMMUNISTwealth of MA, all Ruger MK pistols are not legal to sell here per the AG. Mark 2s were sold in the state prior to 1998 when the MA handgun safety laws went into effect. MK 3s were legal until pulled by Ruger from the state because of the ease of over riding the mag disconnect. So only MK pistols legal for sale were ones in state before the ban.

Ruger MK pistol frames either fit on the receiver or they are lose or tight, that's just the way it is. I had a standard model that was so tight it took a mallet to separate the receiver from the grip frame, then I had a stainless Govt model that the receiver fell off the grip frame, and when fully assembled it could be rotated from left to right very easily.

Take pistol apart. Look at lug on bottom of barrel. Take aluminum drink can. Beverage of your choice. Cut small square same size as bottom of lug. Put it where lug and frame come together when you reassemble. Should fix your problem. Other way is to squeeze frame in vise to close up sides. This will tighten it as well. But I am not fond of that fix.

...even a small piece of electricians tape or the cover of a matchbook (business card?) just something to "squeeze' in the front 'hook,' for the hold down, and will last until the next time you take the gun apart.....

Pistol came back today - top is tight on the frame, not only that they replaced 7 parts in the gun. Ruger customer service really is top notch!

I have been told they peen the underside of the barrel where the frame lug engages to tighten the fit. This can be done in the comfort of your own home if you dare. It shouldn't effect accuracy as the sights are mounted on the upper.

Anyone that has taken a MKII apart has put it back together to discover that the bolt was binding. I see you discovered the process to reassemble correctly and resolve the problem. Years ago, I suffered repeated failed attempts to correctly reassemble. My fingers were bleeding and I had tears in my eyes when I discovered the problem. That was before Youtube. I hope your Uncle is looking down at you and is smiling that you were able to get the MKII up and running again.

That's the same way it's done at Ruger, and how I get it done for my customers. An aluminum shim will work, but it's a temporary band-aide. Pinching the upper sides of the grip frame must be done with caution and I use a one-inch bar as a "stop" for the pinching process so that the pinching can't go too far.

Over time, grip frames do NOT need to become loose if common sense is employed, and it shouldn't be accepted as a "common outcome" even from several thousand take-offs and replacements of the upper to the lower. If an owner will place a dab of anti-seize lubricant under the hook in the front end of the grip frame and then in the receiver receptacle of the bottom of the receiver for said hook, that will prevent galling and rubbing away of the mating metal engagement, which will eventually cause that looseness. It doesn't hurt to add a dab of anti-seize on the hook that's a part of the top end of the mainspring housing assembly either.

I use "Kopr-Kote" anti-seize because it contains copper dust that also acts as an assist with preventing galling, and carry smaller containers for sale to customers.

They are on the Massachusetts list now.

cssjl,

Late condolences to you and your family.

I have been planning on sending a very old RST to Ruger for repair and reblue. I noted on Ruger.com that
both the Mark I and Mark II are listed as no longer serviced, call. Thinking Ruger combines the
RST/MK I, mine would also fall into NLS. I was pleased that they serviced and replaced parts on your Mark II.

I will call them next week.

Thanks.

+1. I would not wait very long to call them for (other than refinish) servicing, as the list of Rugers no longer serviced grows longer every day... :x
