All looks good. Tight lock up, good bore. I'd say a 9 out of 10 overall.
Waffling as to should I buy it or no. Market in these parts is buyer friendly. Safe bet I'd get 10-20%

I have chased buying a nice 4" stainless Security Six for years. Seems like every time I find one the price just seems a little high and I wait for a better deal. Of course, the next one I see is a little higher. Been doing it for years. In the course of looking for a nice 4 incher I have picked up several 2 3/4 Security and Speed Sixes as they show up more often and are easier to buy around here.
Should you buy that one? Can't help with that. This is just a story.

20% off is a lot more attractive… but only if it's something you want…

They don't turn up in person around here very often… but they DO show up routinely on the auction sites. "In person" is always better (plus no shipping/FFL costs)!

In my experience, there are some bargains to be had on stainless -Six series revolvers out there- especially if you don't require 100% cosmetics.

If you're willing to do a little "clean up" with some bronze wool, Flitz (or similar), Scotchbrite, etc., you can save some money.

I've bought a number of them in recent years (coming up on 40 years after discontinuation!) that just needed some love.

Mine are now clean/solid revolvers, ready for the next generation's use!

Mmmm, those are some nice guns. $600 for a very nice example of a gun that's been out of production for nearly 40 years and is still desirable seems like a really good deal. Now I'm thinking I need a security six...

I believe that to be a very fair price for such a Security Six. But if a feller really, really doesn't want it, the price doesn't matter.

$550.00 would be an OK price for me. As others have said they don't turn up that often especially in nice shape.

From the tag it appears to be a mid production (156 prefix) stainless steel high back grip frame version and probably has a standard (vice heavy) taper barrel, smooth (vice grooved) trigger, and domed (vice scalloped) recoil shield. Factory wood grips look good too, condition-wise.

Security Six's are, in my opinion, the best double action mid-frame 357 magnum ever made; rugged and dependable. The other choices, such as the GP100 seem too machine like, the Smith & Wesson K frames have their durability issues, I've never warmed up to the L frames, and the Colts (Official Police, Troopers, Pythons) are very nice but if they go whacky, they are tricky to work on, etc.

I got mine for $480 ($360 plus I traded in a cheap revolver I had very little money in) for mine. Mine wasn't in pristine condition but very good condition over all. I want to say I'd pay $600 for this one but I don't know. I can definitely say I'd get it for $500 maybe $550 out the door.

I'm looking for one that needs cleaned up myself. As much as I'd like a collectors piece I'd rather have a shooter.

I would try and negotiate the price a little then grab it. I recently bought back my stainless 4 inch from friend who was the original owner. We sold it back and forth a couple of times. Not again.

In person is a plus. I don’t see them often in my neighborhood. In my biased opinion, under $600 is a decent if not good deal if all checks out.

Gotta get at least 10% off to cover the Tennessee sales tax! We've been looking to relocate to E TN for a while and the only thing we've found wrong with it is the 9+% sales tax! Variable by town but most towns do add a few percent to the state's 7% cut. Of course, the low property taxes and no income tax make up for it

WMG,, yes,, Tenn has a higher sales tax. And as you see,, no income tax, & low property taxes. Look at it like they are getting taxes out of the visitors to cover a lot of things,, and making it easier on the residents by doing so.

Or,, how about this? Go to a restaurant,, and wait staff have come to expect a 20% tip. So looking at a menu you can say; "Well, this meal lists for $50,, but I'll have to pay $60 for it."

I visit Tenn enough to where I see the higher sales tax,, but I know I'm helping their residents afford other things. And I have family history buried in Tenn.


So,, while we may consider negotiating the sale price of a gun,, we all have to consider the taxes, the FFL fees & sometimes the shipping fees.

The Spousal Unit is actually in TN visiting the kids and grandson as I type this.....they ate at Flapjacks this morning and are currently in Buds Gun Shop. I love that area. However, relocating, even after my soon to be retirement isn't feasible. If it was, I'd move down there in a heart beat. I will bet that lunch will be at Buc-ee's...good eats for a gas station.

Guy at the last Lake of the Ozarks gun show had a six-inch Security Six that looked to be in about that same condition, on the table with a price tag of $650. And I haven't seen a lot of Six-series guns for sale around here, in any kind of condition. So if I had the ready cash, I'd give serious thought to jumping on that.

Seems most common for sale are the 4-inchers ….. those 6 inch stainless seem VERY scarce too and the snubbies ~ well ~ like unicorns in local shops or gun shows.

I saw a blued 6 inch in great condition come up locally about 3 or 4 months ago for $575, surprisingly it sat for a while. The last 2 I saw locally were both 4 inch and one of them is mine now. That was almost exactly 2 years ago, the other was a beat up blued 4 inch low back.

Trick is WHERE do you live in TN? We are located about 3 minutes from GA, 5 minutes from NC.
Purchase of big ticket items require a short drive to beat TN tax. Also…..
GA sales tax applies to anything shipped to that state. GA post office box is the hot set up

You must get some good trade in offers if that's the case, anytime I've traded a gun in the stores usually sell it for at least another $150-175 on top of what they gave me and thats only if it's store credit, if someone sells for cash they're going to get even less. The $150-175 is just an example from cheap guns I've traded in that I knew would take forever to sell. I didn't have much into them so it wasn't a huge loss for me, I wanted to bring the price down on what I was buying so it was worth it. Case in point, I traded in my EAA Windicator for $110 and it sold for $275, that's a lot more than 10-20% profit. 20% would have been $55, even if they haggled it down the store would have still doubled their money.

Whoever traded in that Security Six got maybe $350-$375 I'm sure.The whole point of selling or trading to a store is to not deal with the hassle of selling it yourself or for quick cash, in turn you normally have to take a lot less for it than you would selling it yourself. They're definitely making a lot more than 10-20% profit. If gun stores were trading in or buying guns for prices that only allowed a 10-20% mark up there would be no private sales or online classifieds. Everyone would just sell to their local shop at that point.

Now if we're talking consignments that's a different story, my guy does a 10% mark up on consignments but thats because you have to wait for someone to buy it for the price you want just like a private sale. In the case of a consignment the store owner wouldn't give up their 10% they'd call the owner of the gun and see if they're good with the offer made. Either way they're going to make profit, if a store haggles with you on a used item they're still going to make profit. Granted some stores will do better on trades than others but even the best ones are still doing better than 20%.
