Last night I received a pair of Security Six target grips. These were made by Dave Tillander at Tillander Custom Grips. They're a reproduction of the original factory Ruger target grips. He makes a few reproductions as well as some original designs. His grips are molded from high impact resin. I'm hoping to try them on the range this weekend or early next week after I finish up some reloads. I know the originals are hard to find and expensive when they come up for sale. I think it's great that we can preserve the originals and have a new supply. He also does a reproduction of the factory Speed Six stocks. The quality is very good, when I first heard high impact resin I was thinking plastic. They're nothing like the cheap plastic grips that come with something like the Rock Island revolvers. I'll update after I shoot with them but so far I think they're great.

Here's a link to the Security Six target grips, I linked to the brown set since they're closest to the originals but he does multiple colors and designs.

I'm going to be sending Dave a couple pairs of grips for reproduction, mainly because they're hard to find and it would allow us to keep our originals in good shape and make it easier for others to find grips.

I'm planning to send him a pair of the factory rubber Speed Six grips and a pair of low back Security Six target grips. My factory Speed Six grips aren't in the best shape but I have a spare set without the Ruger medallions I can send. The low back target grips I have aren't in the best shape either. If anyone would like to loan a set of either for this project let me know or reach out to Dave. I'm not sure of the process he uses to make the molds but as far as I know it won't harm the original grips. He's been doing this for a while and I haven't seen any complaints. I'd like to send a pair of each in good condition since they'll be sold to others. The low back grips are the most important since they're so hard to find but I'd like to preserve a pair of the Speed Six grips with the medallion too. If you have a pair of grips you'd like preserve at all I highly reccomend sending them to Dave, he might even have what you're looking for already.

Making some LOW back copies of the factory originals may be a "win" for him.
I forgot to mention that, I'm planning to send my factory low back grips to be reproduced also. Mine are in really good condition so they'd be a good example to make a mold from.

I was thinking the target grips would be a good idea too though. Besides the Texas Grips you have to hope and pray a set of 150 Herretts or Scott's just happen to pop up. At least once or twice a year someone asks about better grips for the low backs. Normally that leads into telling them to keeping checking ebay and they can make high back Pachmayrs work. This would give us an affordable and readily available option. As much as I'd like to spend $130 on a nice pair of Texas Grips I just can't right now.

This ad shows the later Six Series with scalloped recoil shield. Some of us got lucky and found these grips at Numrich a few years back. To me, this target grip was a huge improvement over their original targets. I use this on a 6 inch Security Six but for the shorter barrel guns I still prefer the "regular" wood grips and add a Tyler T.

WOW---I had no idea the factory targets had gone so high. I hit the link above and scrolled down to see them at $159. Is this really what they are going for? Remember about 10 years ago when Ruger was closing these out. I think they were around $20 a set. Then they went all out and were selling a case of 6 for like $40---or some crazy cheap price. Of course I bought a case but now kicking myself for not buying all they had. I think I still have 1 or 2 still in the blister packaging.

I must be the only person who didn't like the original target grips. To me, they looked cheap, felt slick and would work loose after 20 or 30 rounds. Never could get them to remain tight on the grip frame.

The ones pictured above are a total different animal.

Thanks for posting this, I ordered a pair of the black stocks for my stainless security six 4"
No problem, I know how hard it is finding grips for the Six revolvers. Aside from Hogue and Pachmayr there's not much to choose from unless you go the custom wood route and that can get expensive.

I may order a set of grips from this guy for my Speed Six? Thanx for posting.
No problem. I haven't tried the Speed Six grips so I can't really comment on them. Even though my Speed Six is a high back I hated shooting with the factory stocks on my low back. I didn't they'd be much better on the Speed Six even with the high back frame.

I'm planning on sending him the factory rubber grips for the Speed Six to be reproduced. I think those will be great, they're my favorite grips for it so far.

I bought a set from them when they were closing them out. I seem to recall they were $10 brand new. Like you, I should have bought 50 sets and made 15 times my investment.
