I recently bought a security six 357mag. ss 161 prefix 4in barrel.

I know Ruger doesn't support them anymore.

Are there any parts that would be good for me to be on the lookout for to have on hand?

Welcome to the forum.
Fellow member going by RoninPA be a good source of info for you. He an FFL and gunsmith with EXCELLENT reputation and works on a lot of these.

I think a few years back I even bought an assortment of parts from him “just in case”.

Thanks for the response, I've read several of his posts, I will try to figure out how to contact him

All the parts you should need are usually on e bay cheap lately. They are coming from police seized guns they turn in to get cut up. I have bought cylinders, cranes, springs, screws etc. sometimes small parts $5 and up cylinders $60 etc. There also were a ton of new hammers in factory envelopes recently cheap, I figured police, military or factory sold an old stash.

With a 161 prefix, that is getting late into the production time so it is a "newer" model. A lot depends on how you are going to use it, abuse it, modify it, etc. I really think the average Six series revolver owner really doesn't need to keep parts on hand. That said if it were me, I'd probably keep any/all of the internal springs, maybe the mainspring strut and a pawl. Brownells use to carry a tool to make taking the revolver apart easier (called the Ruger "Popper" but they don't carry it any more. That said, I have copied them and have several in the shop that can be purchased.

Although Ruger doesn't support them any more, parts can be found in a number of places:

https://www.gunpartscorp.com/
https://cfnparts.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=484
https://jackfirstinc.com/
and other places like eBay as protoolman stated.

I work on the Six series revolvers so I have a supply of parts in my shop but even I have to go to one of the bigger places to get parts at times.

If you have any questions you can contact me (although I don't know if you can send private message yet because of being new)

Thanks for the responses...I have a pair of original grips and new stainless screw, a takedown pin , new cylinder latch, on the way from numrich. Was just wondering if there was anything that would be good to have in case some parts dry up and become hard to get. Would hate for it to become a paper weight over a few dollars part.. I don't get to go shoot often and I don't abuse any of my firearms. May not clean them as often as I should.lol

Thought I'd share some pics of the Security Six

One of my MOS's was small arms repair. Although I was trained in the repair of the Army M-108 revolver, (Service Six), never did I ever see one sent to us for repair. That mirrors my personal experience also.
Now, springs are a different issue. I have experienced springs and plungers zing into outer space. So, replacement springs are sometimes handy. Buying a whole armorers array of Security Six parts can be both scarce and expensive. Another option is to find a severe shooter grade revolver to rob parts if needed.

Thanks for the information, I will keep an eye out for spare springs on eBay, and other places, on the cheap.

I had a few Security Six revolvers and I used them a lot and I can't imagine one needing parts. Other than possibly needing a replacement spring I think you're good to go leaving it alone.
