I Cant seem to find the Security Six I want and was wondering if the GP100 has the same double action feel as the Sec Six.
I just need to own one I guess because I dont have one.
Never thought Id see the day I can buy the combat magnum Smith cheaper than the Ruger.
thanks martyj

I like the lockwork better on the Six series better then the GP's.

Can't really explain why, but it certainly feels different to me.

I no longer own any GP's, but I do still have my trusty old Six. ;)

I'm just the opposite. The Sixes all seem to have a bump in the middle of the DA stroke. I find the GP DA trigger pull to be just right - no bumps, no stacking. I do my best DA shooting with the GP.
They certainly are different, probably the only thing you'll get an agreement on.

I agree with PO2Hammer, the trigger feels smoother on the GP 100. FWIW, I have both a Security Six and GP 100 and have installed Wolff spring kits/Trigger Shims on both.

I picked up a new GP 4" a couple weeks ago and had already purchased a Wolf spring kit in anticipation of it.

I decided to take it to the range and run some ammo through it to kinda deburr the innards a little before installing that kit.
Well I want to report that my GP is sooo smooth and nice right out of the box that I
don't know if I want to mess with it. It`s also a very accurate revolver to boot.
If the kit did improve it it would be the smoothest double action I have ever owned. I have two Security Sixes. Both SS and they are NOT for sale either.
:D :D :D

Most of the GPs we've had and shot were much nicer, smoother, stock out of the box, than the security sixes, besides the older ones being smaller, recoil more....if you're gonna shoot and use, especially a LOT, get the GP, and as noted above hold off on any spring kits till you actually break it in, I've had the kits around here ,never made it into the guns,no need to..............

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
Differences between the two will be no greater than the differences between any two of the same model. I have SS's that are smooth as glass and GPs that are their equal. If either is rough OTB it just needs a good trigger job.

Thanks for your advice guys. Not looking for a collector just a good shooter.
The nice ones never seem to make it to the range around here.

Marty, one thing to remember, they didn't stop making them for no reason....keep this in mind to the future.
You are correct: To expensive to manufacture according to Bill Ruger, and the k-frame sized revolver was being replaced by the auto for LEOs. More difficult to manufacture strength into a smaller size than to just add bulk. They saw it coming and made adjustments for the new market.
I'm not saying the GP ain't a fine revolver, but there multiple reasons why they stopped making them.

A previous poster mentioned the real reason for the demise of the Security-Speed-Service Six revolvers, cost of manufacture. They required more machining and heat-treatment that the GP-100 series with its much thicker cast frame/larger cylinder.

I owned a 6 inch GP-100 from 1989 until March of this year when I finally traded it away. I also owned a 4 inch and 3 inch at one time. I let them go after purchasing the older guns. A 6 inch blued Security-Six, then a blued 2 3/4 inch and finally a somewhat rare .38 Special Police-Service Six 4 inch. The older guns just feel better to me, and that little 2 3/4 incher could shoot tighter groups than the short barrel GP-100.

When I want to shoot a heavy .357 magnum, I grab my S&W model 27 or 28.

The .38 Special Police Service-Six with Jay Scot Zebrawood grips.

After having owned both I prefer the Six series myself, very strong K frame size and weight and frankly I prefer the way they look.

Yeah, the Sixes are nice looking, probably the best looking of all Ruger revolvers, SA or DA. (although that's not saying a whole lot ;) )

I guess I bought my GP100 to be my 'if you could only have one handgun' handgun. I'm not disappointed in any way.
