While firing a new-to-me Security Six 357 today, I encountered three failures to fire from light primer strikes out of 12 rounds. Subsequent hammer drops fired them OK. Any ideas as to what could be the problem? The gun is used and 34 years old so my first thought was weak mainspring or maybe one someone had lightened too much in the past.

Or put in a light "Trapper" mainspring. Yep, that was my first thought too. Good place to start looking.

Likely causes;

Weak mainspring.
Wrong mainspring.
Altered mainspring.
Dirt, grit, dried oil or grease inside the firing pin cup.
Worn or chipped firing pin.

I respringed my Security-Six with springs from Midway a few months ago. In years past I cut a few coils & then had to add some to keep reliability up. I went back to a complete & correct spring.

IF you were using reloads could be primers not seated fully...first strike seated them and second one fired them.
