Scope mount problems.

My new 30-06 RSI is using aftermarket mounts and the rifle is shooting 15 feet low at 50 yards. I think the mounts are a little high and maybe the short barrel (20") exacerbates the problem. I swapped mounts with another rifle (a 24" Tropical) to see if the lower mounts correct the situation on the RSI. If so, I will shoot the Tropical and see if it can be made to work with the taller mounts. if not then replacements are in order.

Anyone have experience with this situation? Does the barrel length have any effect on scope height?

What is the problem with the original mounts? Do you have the aftermarket ones switched? One is taller than the other.

Barrel length has zero to do with that. The bores centerline in relation to the scopes line of sight does not change wether it is an 18 inch or 18 foot barrel. Sounds more like a problem with the mounts. Did you try the factory rings to see if the same thing happens?

I had a MkII that had the scope notches cut improperly and the rifle was not repairable. Gave the same troubles you are having but it shot way left instead of low. Ruger ended up destroying the reciever and sent me a replacement gun. Hopefully that isnt your problem and it is just the rings.

Just to clarify, with your elevation maxed out you're point of impact is 15' low at 50 yards, correct?

I had a similar problem a few weeks back, ran out of elevation and was shooting about 5 feet low at 100 yards. I shimmed the rear scope ring a bit and got back into the "normal" range of being able to sight in with the scope's elevation about midway between up & down. I used shim stock from Brownells:

That you are hitting low indicates the scope is canted up to back to front. Mount the scope conventionally but lave the rear top ring off. Iis there a space between the bottom of the scope and the lower inside curve of the rear ring? If there is, when you mount the scope your in effect pushing down on the rear end and canting it up. Shimming the rear should even it out and correct.

Or, return the rings and try again?

When I re scoped I switched to Burris Signature Z rings and Burris Ruger to Weaver bases. Can align scope with there shim's when needed. Only used scope adjustment on the final 2". No more scratched and stressed scope due to miss aligned rings. All three of my Rugers sport Burris rings and bases. M77V .220 tang M77 .243 tang #1 B .243 all 70's vintage.

I have only ever had one problem with ruger rings and that was on the rifle that had the ring cuts machined wrong on the reciever...so it was not a problem with the rings. And although I don't own as many 77's as some , I own more than most(dozens) and have owned dozens more in the past. I guess I just don't see how some people have so much trouble with the factory rings?? :roll: :roll:

We hear on a regular basis on this site and others that ruger rings are junk but I put on brand x or y and all is well. I'm not buying it. Otherwise over the last 25 years with the number of 77's I have put scopes on , the percentages say I should have had a bad set or two of rings.

I'll come out and say it...I'll bet most troubles are due to people not mounting them properly even when they think they know what they are doing. I do have Burris Signatures on other rifles and they are a nice design and very forgiving when mounting a scope , but I have yet to scratch/dent a scope with the factory Ruger rings or (except that one rifle) have one that the scope is so far off I can't hit the barn when standing inside it.

Rugers rings are one of the best designs ever put on a rifle and imo don't need adapters and what ever to make em work...
