I looked at the above thread about grips and think I understand grip sizes, but don't "know" for sure. I'm about to add a SBH SS to my 2 other Blackhawk's. I haven't decided yet on either the 5.5 or 4.62. I'll have to flip a coin on it as I already have both barrel lengths and like them both.

The question I have is whether the shorter barreled SBH's use the same grip as a standard Blackhawk? I know the longer barreled versions use the Dragoon style.

Thanks, and I know it's been asked before but I did not find a definite answer.

Yes they do. I changed the shorter grip on my 5.5" to a longer Hunter grip frame (same length as the 7.5" SBH, but with a rounded trigger guard instead of the Dragoon square back).

It handles much better for me with the longer grip frame:
(the SS frame came from Brownell's - it's a Ruger made part, and the grip panels from Altamont)

The xr3 red gripframe (the round one) beats my kunckels black and blue. Squareback, (the dragoon style) is smooth and comfortable. Can shoot heavy loads with no problem. In fact , have put super blackhawk gripframes on 357 blackhawks many times to make them more manageable.

I just got my lipseys 45 convertible flat top out today for its first time and it beats my knuckles up too. I looked at the Brownells site for the gripframe mentioned above.
Will this one work on the new flat top convertible?

That's the exact same longer grip frame I put on my 5.5" Super Blackhawk. Being rough cast (But not too rough), it requires some fitting & polishing.

I didn't care much for my brother's 7.5" SBH with the squareback trigger guard. It was hard on my knuckles. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
