sweet guns if you find one for 500 buy it, routinely sell for 700+
My Dad had one he used for Bulleye competition (1960 's)and I had one years later. Very accurate. I don't recall any preference for a particular brand of ammo. The one my dad had, came with two barrels, 5.5" and 6.5 or 7" IIRC. the longer had what seem to be a muzzle weight.
MSRP is $1179 and I've occasionally seen them, pre-owned, at gun shows and local stores at around $600-700. One barrel only.

I second Doc, they are pricey, but they will last a lifetime, they are scary accurate, and are simply a well built American icon. Save up and get one, you won't be sorry.

I paid 900 for a SW 41 in 2008, it came with an Ultra Dot red dot though (they are about 150 by themselves though.) Worked for a while then develpoed problems. Back to Smith and Wesson it went and $350 later it worked perfectly (needed a new slide for whatever reason.) Very accurate and not to particular on which ammo it uses... I'm happy with it.
Lesson learned: Ruger customer service better than Smith and Wesson. (SW later billed my credit card automatically several months after I paid for the service, which was difficult to straighten out.)
