I thought some here might be interested in seeing this. I sent an old pinned and recessed S&W 5" Model 27 .357 to Alan Harton in Houston. He did a no-frills conversion to 38 WCF (38-40 Win.). I put on a set of holly grips I had made for it while it was gone. It shoots pretty good with Oregon Trails lead bullets and Hornady XTP JHPs, and will make a nice companion gun to the 1892 Winchestor also pictured below.

Lovely sixgun and great combination! Good to see another .38-40 fancier. Been playing with my Uberti 1873 Sporting Rifle a lot recently. 180gr Gold Dots do terrible things when pushed to nearly 1500fps. Toying with the idea of having my Old Model .357 Blackhawk converted to a 7½" .38-40.

Will Farr: nice conversion you have there.

I shoot a 38 WCF Ruger "Buckeye Special" and the .38-40 is IMHO a very unappreciated cartridge. You given me an idea as to what to save for next....

Thanks, boys. I have shot that Winchester a good bit, but this was my first experience with 38WCF in a handgun, and I loved it. Good velocity and power, nice loud boom, but not much kick--very easy to control. It has very quickly become one of my favorite pistols. I almost messed up. CraigC, you will appreciate this--my first plan was to have the M27 converted to 44WCF as a companion gun to my 44WCF Uberti 1873 Winchester Sporting Rifle. But I got to thinking, it would for all practical purposes be a 44Spl., and I already have 7 or 8 of those. So I went with the 38-40, and am glad I did. If yall decide to have a conversion done, I believe you will be very pleased with 38-40 in a handgun.

Yes, it took me about 2 years to find a decent 1892 Winchester that I could afford. Bkat, I made the holly grips myself while the gun was being worked on. They are really not as yellow as they look in the pictures, but have a little more brown in the yellow. They look a lot like old aged ivory if you don't look too close.
