I can't seem to find any Ruger SR1911's nearby, but in the meantime, I've been fondling all sorts of different manufacturers'1911s..

What is the SR1911's main competition?

I had a local shop show me a Springfield 1911, but the sights and construction weren't great at all (ie. felt cheap, especially for the price).

Then I had him show me a Smith and Wesson 1911 "E" Series..... Wow, that gun felt AMAZING.... But, I would hope so at $400 more than an SR1911.

I've also heard RIA's are good for the price, but seem to be a bit "below" the SR1911...

Everything I've read says the SR1911 is the best gun for the price, so I'm wondering if that means it really has no competition.. ?

When you say 'the SR1911 is the best gun for the price' ... it depends on what the price is ...

At $650 or less ... it probably is ....

Between $650 and $750 .... there are equal or better choices.

At MSRP of $800 .... there are DEFINITELY better choices.

The RIA's are good guns with very good triggers out of the box, but they are not finished as nicely as the SR1911 or the Springfields.

Some of the things you mentioned in your original post confuse me .... is this your first 1911 ? If it is .... the first thing you have to do is figure out your max price that you will spend (including any mods that you absolutely require). That determines everything.

I'm surprised that you said the Springfield felt 'cheap' ... you must have been looking at the GI model (which many purists and traditionalists prefer) ... a small dollar amount step up to the MilSpec model will get you some very important upgrades ... FAR better sights, and some other upgrades as well like flared mag well, and a lowered and flared ejection port. Well worth the money.

If you get ANYWHERE near $1000 in your budget ... I would highly advise you to seriously consider the Colt Gold Cup (if your use will primarily be target shooting). If your budget is even CLOSE to $1000 ... buy once and be done with it with the GoldCup. You'll get incredible accuracy, superb reliability, fantastic adjustable sights, and the Colt name for less than you'd spend on a lesser gun and then adding all the upgrades.

Buying the best 1911 for the money is all about your budget .... different budgets mean that the answers to 'the best gun for the money' changes drastically. The Springfield 'Loaded' models are tremendous guns at about $850 (or slightly less).

i have 3 sr 1911's all great guns and also picked up a remington 1911 r1 just because it was there. i like them all no promblems with the remington thus far and seems very well built as well as the rugers. it was a bit cheaper at the time but supply seems to be catching up alittle. just my 2 cents worth

I liked the Desert Eagle C model when I was shopping and the day I bought my SR1911, it came down to the Eagle, a Remington and a Used Springfield Range Officer

I wanted a Ruger to go with my other Rugers I have, but I do wish Ruger would make a Commander size slide and Barrel kit available

I selected my Rock Island Armory 1911 because I just wanted to get some training time with a 1911.

I have owned three other 1911's over the years and I did not do my home work during ownership. I just bought them because they looked good and the sales guy was pushing them.

I have had two Sigs and a Springfield and they were great guns. Well, I shot less than 500 rounds and traded them as my interest were known to wonder.

I never learned all about the 1911 and I never really learned the proper way to take it apart and perform maintenance.

My RIA 1911 is that gun. I have been breaking it down and putting it back together just for practice. I intend to treat in hard and learn all that I can so at some point, I will select a keeper 1911.

So far, my RIA 1911 is great fun to shot and for the price it is doing just fine.

Bought one a couple years ago, it's a GREAT 1911! Nicest trigger on a factory gun I've used, to date.... I probably have ~1500 rounds thru her and the only failure I had was because I didn't seat the mag.

$600 OTD, she was on sale.
