Ruger SPNY .38 Spec. Information

I know that there is alot of history information here on the SPNY version of the SP101, but I still have a question or two.

Is there a definite range of serial numbers for these revolvers? Is the last serial number known for the 570- XXXXX range?

I know that there were some "Target Grey" models and some "Brushed Stainless" models. I can guess what a brushed stainless might look like, but what does a target grey model look like?

Hittman, I actually did this search before making my post. I just got tired of reading about GPNY's and security sixes after about the 4th page.

I did find chet15's informatin helpful, however he talks like the last serial number for SPNY's are 570-47403. This batch according to the post was in target grey. I bought an SPNY, short frame, serial number 570-55XXX awhile ago. This number is outside the range listed in his post.

Did Ruger Keep all of the SPNY serial numbers in a consectutive range or were they randomly assigned?

Without knowing what a "Target Grey" finish looks like, I was trying to find out if mine is grey or brushed stainless. I was hoping someone could provide a photo of a grey model to compare.

You should maybe shoot a PM or email to chet15.

If your gun is outside what he's got listed in RENE, he and others would be very interested in knowing that. I've found him to be very helpful and generous with his time and knowledge through contacts on the Forum.

The "target gray" to me looks matte ~ like a painted-on finish. The "regular" stainless guns have a brushed look just like the old Security Six's and newer SP's and GP's.

I'm not sure how Ruger "blocks" the serial number info; that's something I would ask chet15, Terry T, WMG, WAYNO and others I see who post a lot about the Ruger double actions.

I spotted an SPNY at a lgs on Saturday. This one had a 3" barrel and wood grip inlays. I don't know if it was "brushed" stainless, but it definitely had a higher gloss than the two other SP 101s next to it. price was $499 I believe.

Here is some additional information on my Ruger SPNY for those owners that are interested. Chet15 here on the forum has a lot of good information, but he didn't have mine listed anywhere so I emailed Ruger CS. Here is their response.

Model: KSPNY-821
Shipped: May of 1993

This was a special production run for one of our major U. S. Distributors.

We regret that company policy prohibits us from advising to whom firearms were originally shipped and that for competitive reasons we are unable to advise how many of any model have been produced.

Not really much to go on, but at least I have a "born on" date and a model number.

I will say that Ruger CS was very prompt and easy to deal with.

The key info is that Ruger identifies it as a NY model. Very cool! :D

Next question is where does it fit into the various runs of NY guns and the odd finishes? The target gray NY guns are a very dull gray as opposed to the brushed stainless one usually sees on SP-101s. Finish does look like it was applied while the brushed stainless looks like just (sort of) finished bare metal.

We are constantly finding out new information (like ser. no. ranges) about these. We'd love to have your info in Chad's database.

I have a GPNY, and I am looking for an SPNY.

From what I understand, all of the SPNY and GPNY guns had the frosted matte stainless finish, and all were DAO. The GPNY's have a "medium" sized grip with SP101 plastic inserts.

There were "over runs" sold as surplus that had the standard stainless finish with regular spurred hammers. I have not seen an over run SPNY, but I imagine they exist. I have seen over run GPNY's, and it had the GPNY stamp on the frame. The over run GPNY's have wood inserts in the grips, and have standard compact grips.

Yes, all the SPNY's and GPNY's have the SPNY or GPNY rollmark on the cylinder frame. Its just that the ones considered the overruns have Ruger's regular brushed finish.
As far as the gun being a distributor special as mentioned above by Ruger's response...it was never a distributor special, its just that when the overrun's came up on Ruger's inventory list they were probably all sold to one distributor.
