hi folks! new here, got a question on my new best friend,,, my best bud knew i love 7x57s,, and since he has 4 and i do all his load development , he sold me this beautiful round top! (for only 700)
i was quick to build up a load with 120 grain barnes ttsx and a nice amount of N150.. i have been handloading and doing load development for a long time,, lots of 77s came across my bench, none shot like this, and in fact many custom guns haven't..
the question is,, anyone

else had such good results with an older rifle like this?? and anyone have an opinion on what barrel might be on mine? im thinking Douglas??

Early 77’s like yours that shoot like that often have Wilson barrels.
Wilson was a maker of barrels for the firearms industry.
Interarms used them on the early MkX rifles.
A high school buddy bought an early M77 round top in .270 in Summer of ‘75. It shot 3-shots touching for both of us out of the box, WITH IRON SIGHTS! Both my MkX’s shoot under 1” 3-shots. Often touching.

A later M77 MkII in .257Roberts was lucky to shoot 3” groups….

I have a tang safety M77 in 7x57 also it is an early one with the non fluted front sight. I will have to try that load have not loaded for it yet just shooting factory to get brass to reload.that is a helluva group or you could call it hole.

I believe the 7x57 in that time had a long throat. If I recall correctly they shot best with 175 grain bullets for me. The ones I dealt with were RS not round tops.

My early flatbolt RS .308 is capable of ragged hole groups - best so far are 150 grain Sierra Gamekings with Reloder 15 powder. Incidentally bought some quite a few years ago from Hawkeye #28, who just posted above. Seems like a lot of those early 77s are real shooters.

That’s an accurate load in all my ‘06’s!

Wifey has a Remington 7x57 Mountain Rifle. Only she has game taken was a 260-270 lb. wild pig with one shot at a measured 250 yards while running. Used 140 gr Nosler Partitions in a handload. My first rifle was a '93 Mexican Mauser that I customized myself. Only took a few jacks with it although a couple were at pretty decent ranges.

Years back I had two Ruger 7x57s, a Number One A and an M77RS. The Number One had a bad barrel and went back to Ruger. Came back with a new barrel. Shoots good now. I still have it. The M77RS was fair with 175 gr. spitzers and shot nicely with the 175 gr. round nose bullets. I did get one load with the 140 gr. Sierra Pro-Hunters to do MOA or slightly better. I'm kind of sorry I sold it.
Still have a Winchester M70 FWT and a custom Mauser in 7x57 that are very accurate. I have a load running the 150 gr. Nosler Partition at 2800+ FPS that is sum-MOA in all three rifles. Can't beat that with any kind of a stick. Powder used is a max load of RL17.
