Yep, just purchased this rifle...in caliber .45 70. If I'm reading the Ruger charts right, it's the first year of production and the 31st No. 3 ever manufactured. Am I right?

The gun is new in the box, unfired, and it has all the papers.

I hate to break your heart but Ruger doesn't produce firearms in serial number sequence. Its unlikely yours is the 31st, but there is a chance. Either way, you have a nice rifle that will bring plenty of enjoyment as long as you stick to reasonable loads with it. Enjoy!

It IS serial# 31 though for a No.3!
It is just that generally, the 2 digit serial # firearms at Ruger did not get made first. The first production runs were generally in the range of 200 to 1200. Note that I have used the word "generally" more than once. It is not a hard and fast rule!

A low digit anything is fun to find... congrats !!!!! I found one a couple weeks ago, it was a 3 digit gun, not a 2. I posted the info here, went into his shop three different times all in the hopes that it would be gone..

I ended up buying it...

Thanks, guys. I knew about the serialization issues at Ruger, but I still thought it was pretty cool that the numbers for the No. 3 start at 130-50000 (per the RL Wilson book) and this is 130-50031. The gun is in absolutely perfect condition, not a mark on it, and it's not tapped for a scope. And of course, no warning on the barrel. It was originally made for a Ruger employee. It is a pretty cool rifle. Between my Marlins and Rugers I have more .45 70 rifles than the US Cavalry, but that's okay, too.

Yes, Bob Dearden was the employee who had the #31 subscription guns.

It is also true that Ruger started sn'ing #3's at 130-50000. Ruger shipped that gun as a "used" gun with "U" prefix or suffix serial number in the early '80's, but generally speaking, everybody usually considers 130-50031 to be the 31st gun made. 31 or 32, doesn't matter....its still early!! :)
Congrats on your new acquisition!
