I've owned a #3 in 223 rem for quite a long time, here's an image of the old girl

#3 july 23.jpg

looking at her she's nearly 40 years old now and she can't read. Which means she's not seen the BS on the internet that says #3s are inaccurate. When she first came to me all those years ago 3 shot groups that were cloverleafs were the norm but nowadays she's opened up to 1" and sometimes a wee bit more so I guess that the many thousands of rounds she's consumed have started to erode that barrel.
I feel I've got to give her something a bit heavier to consume and here lies my problem.
The gunsmith advises that he can machine the extractor to suit the 308/30/06 rim but it's a one time only chance. Ruger have no #3 308/30/06 extractors and gave a non committal grunt when I asked if the #1 extractor fitted it saying there was no way they could condone fitting parts from one gun into a different model and in any event wouldn't sell to a foreign customer so I thought I'd ask here.
So does anyone know if the #1 extractor can fit the #3 action? I can order that extractor from the UK distributer.
FWIW the barrel is going to be chambered for the 35 whelen as I can use cast boolits from 120 grains right up to 250 grains plus those lovely looking Sierra 225 grain btsp bullets when I want to hunt hogs.

Some of the people at Ruger should not be allowed to respond to technical inquiries.

There is absolutely NO difference between the No.1 and No. 3 extractors! In fact, Ruger never chambered the No.3 for any cartridge with the 308/30-06 head size (223 was the only non-rimmed cartridge it was chambered in), so that's BS info right from the start.

Actually I have to hold up my hand and say that was me paraphrasing as they have no spares for the no 3 period.
I was pretty sure that they would fit as I field stripped my #1 for cleaning and the #3 immediately afterward and they "looked" the same. size except for the chamber section.
Either way they wouldn't sell me one because of export regulations, tbh I'm past caring now and the gun will be off to be rebarreled as soon as I get a definitive quotation for the works.
Many thanks for your info.
