They were a distributor special about 10 years ago or so. Davidson's did them. There were a couple of different "Great 8's"

Yes, as contender said...two different models.
As follows (from the reference)

MK8 (Ruger model 0136) Special Distributor model. A "Great Eight" model". Known s/n range 224-14099 to 224-75123. A total of 912 shipped from 2000 to 2001 to Davidson's (AZ).

and then the 22/45 model:

P8GC (Ruger model 0197) Special Distributor model. Rollmarked with "Great Eight". Known s/n range 224-26303 to 226-11466. Several thousand believed to have been produced from 2000 to 2002 and 2004 for Davidson's (AZ).

I grabbed the 22/45 model when they came out but hesitated on the other model since they were so available at the time. Snooze & lose. :( I can say mine is verry accurare.

I also picked one up when Davidson's released them. I was in the market for a squirrel gun and it has not let me down!

It is one of the most accurate Ruger pistols I've owned, after stripping the sights and mounting a 2x Leupold, stippling the front strap & part of the back, and installing a Clark trigger - WOW.

Sorry to open up an old thread, but I'm trying to find info on my Great Eight. Based on the serial number (224-26303) I am wondering if I possibly have the first Great Eight made??? And if so, is it more special?

I need to check my notes but you may indeed have the first P8GC. It would depend whether Davidson's received any pre-production samples of the model before Ruger got the go-ahead for an order.
I know I don't have any earlier serial numbers and I got my info from Davidson's.
Yeah...its special if its the first...but proving its the first might be tough...especially if Ruger kept an earlier reference example as well.
Extra value would depend on how bad the next guy wants it.

First Ruger MK8 serial number 224-14099 earliest known number resides in my safe. it is one of the 4 in pick. All NIB. One of my favorite models. As far a value of 1st one made I did pay a bit more than I wanted to get it. But you only regret what you don't buy.

Does anyone know what would be a fair price on one of these. Thanks

I'd jump on any I see under $400, minus any detractors.
Install Clark and Majestic Arms parts. Mine are also free of wear or damage, and I'd not let go of one for under $550 these days.
Limited productions and not likely to be re-made.

Incidentally, the correct scope mount is the steel three-screw receiver mount stamped "RUGER", cut for their factory rings. Although the catalogs state "all Competition Target models include ..." the mount and rings, both of mine bought new did not.

And finally, I bought my first about Sept. 1999, a 22/45 model. Found the receipt to be certain.

I don't run a museum, I shoot 'em. Squirrels fear 'em.
