I know it is a long shot but just checking to see if anyone has had any hands on experience with the model 8587 LE Only Short Barrel Rifle Ruger makes? I am the Assistant Chief for a smaller PD and am in the process of taking quotes on SBR's right now. I love my Ruger AR's and find them to be exceptional rifles that will withstand "duty" usage. No one really even seems to know Ruger offers these to Law Enforcement.

Is there a reason you want to go with SBR's? I spent 20+ years in both civilian and military law enforcement and always preferred a 16" rifle. Unless you are planning on running suppressors the 16" barrel is a significant boost in performance

The only reason for a 10.5" AR is for suppressor use, IMO. I built a 10.5 specifically for that purpose, to P/W a can for a 1 stamp gun.
Without the can the concussion and muzzle flash from that short barrel is impressive, to say the least.
Oh I know. I took a CQB course recently where one of the guys ran a 12.5" 308 Win. It was sooooooooo loud that my peltors would shut off every time he fired near me. The muzzle flash was impressive as well
Hopefully Contender will have his meet this Fall... I'll bring my AR style "pistol" with the 10" barrel that shoots 357 Sigs...
I'm by far not an expert but it just seems to me for most urban law enforcement if a department wanted to issue rifles to their officers I'd go for ones that shoot pistol caliber rounds and take the same magazines as what their current carry guns have. Of course Bill Ruger tried to convince folks of this years ago with the first PC Carbines...

I reckon you have seen where Glock is dropping the 357Sig cartridge. It is a dying round. A lil hot rod, but sounds like a 30 Carbine pistol. Will deafn you with that high frequency report
My latest rifle fad is the ones from TNW firearms out of Oregon.... I bought both their rifle and 'pistol' in 357 Sig Caliber and then also ordered the 9mm barrels and bolts....takes about 5 seconds to change out a barrel. This is their key part of the design to make it easy to break the gun down and store it in a back pack or such. But changing the bolt requires a little more work... have to open up the receiver and such.... they just recently fixed that by coming up with a universal bolt that will work with 9mm, 40 cal, 357 Sig or 10MM. not sure about 45acp. The one item I don't like about these is they only accept Glock magazines.... (But their 45acp model takes 1911 mags!) I've been seriously thinking about offering them a goodly amount of money to develop a receiver that accepts Sig P226 magazines.... if they did I would be the happiest gun owner on the planet. Or they might could follow Ruger's lead with the newer PC Carbine .... with an adapter, but then Ruger left out Sig in that platform too... I've often wondered if one of the two Ruger mag options on the PC's would work with Sigs. Also why the 'old' P series mags were not a part of that either... but then they might actually work... I stopped buying Ruger pistols when they drank the Glock / striker fired kool aid.
I still think for a short barreled LEO rifle a pistol caliber would be better. Keep the actual rifles in the SWAT van. 3-0-6 or 308 or 300 Win. leave those little .223 bullets for the military and the bad guys.
