hi, i recently purchased a nm blackhawk. and it appears the base pin is way too long. as i cant remove it. is this normal for this model?? ( scratches head)

Yes, it is designed that way. The older three screws had a shorter pin, just like a Colt. And just like a Colt, when firing heavy recoiling loads, if the latch is not secured, it is possible for the pin to work its way out and get lost. When Ruger redesigned the New Model in the 1970s they included the longer pin, that would not easily get lost.

You can replace it with a shorter Belt Mountain pin if you want.

The NM Blackhawks have a collar to prevent them from going too far into the frame. If it's properly seated,, the collar will be flush with the frame.

The base pin in my 4 5/8 Blackhawk does not come out. The one in my 4 5/8 Flat top does.
