I am going to be purchasing a ruger 77/44 44magnum and I would like to put a leupold 3-9x50 atop it. Will this fit? Will I need high scope rings? Thanks!
It will fit with high rings might even fit with medium but be close. Way more scope than you need though and it is going to look really out of place. Your gun do what you like but I would be more inclined to go with a much smaller scope. I see no need for more than maybe, big maybe, 7 power. There are a few options of 2x7s that are much smaller scopes can be mounted lower on the gun and you still have more magnification than is needed. I have a 2x7 on my 77/44 mounted in medium rings. Only reason is I got the scope at a great deal. If the price was not as good as it was I would looked for 4 or 5 power on the high end.
Okay, the reason I wanted one with such a big bell was for low light conditions in the woods, would I be better off with a fixed power? Like a 6x42 fx3?
I would stick with a good quality 3-9x40 riflescope for your rifle. A leupold 3-9x40 (a brand you mentioned) will look good on the rifle, the tube is long enough to fit between the rings well and give you enough play to fit your eye and the eyepiece is small enough in the medium rings that the bolt handle won't hit it.
BTW, any good quality scope in a 3-9x40 will give you plenty of low light performance during legal shooting hours.
Okay, the thing I'm worried about is the bell, will it fit on the gun without getting high rings? I know the gun comes with rings but idk what size they are, and I don't want my scope rubbing the rear iron sight. Is this an issue?
If you are talking about the 3-9x50, I don't know if it will clear the barrel w/the medium rings the gun ships with. I have a friend with a 77/44 and his 3-9x40 barely cleared the folded down sight.

As long as you are buying the gun new you can exchange the rings. Ruger will swap the supplied rings for any size you want. As for mounting room there should be any issues. The 77/44 has two slots for the rear ring gives you a little more room to move the scope forward which you will probable need to do. LOP of the 77/44s is on the short side so scopes usually need to be more forward to get proper eye relief. As to previous comments during legal shooting light you will not see a difference between a 40 and a 50 objective. A 40 would work just fine with the medium rings and allow for a more natural sight picture. With a 50 in high rings your cheek is going to be up off the stock. You will have to move around to get a sight picture. Not very conducive to fast or accurate shooting.
