Ruger 77/17 varmint

Just bought a second hand one after much searching, as you can't buy them new over here at the moment. Mine is unfired not a mark on it, apparently the guy bought it took it home and put it in his safe, but never got round to using it. It's got a black laminated stock with the Matt stainless steel metalwork,24' barrel. I think I'll replace the scope that's on it with the 4-12x40 redfield that's on my 7 mm Rem mag. It's going to get a slightly better scope, it needs a bit more magnification.

Question is, is their a consensus on what ammo these things like or is it a case of taking many different boxes to the range. How many people have had to bed these rifles to shoot good or do they do great from the box mostly?

I now have three Rugers all are black laminated stocks and Matt stainless steel. I used to be a blued and walnut guy.

I have one of the regular 77/17's. Wood stock, tapered barrel. I didn't do anything to it, and I use it in my work. I use Hornady ammo. Shoots very, very good!

Accuracy reports I've read on the 77/17s seem to be almost universally good. (Unlike the 77/22.)

I've had my 77/17, blue and walnut, for 11 years. It has a 3x9 40 mm Nikon scope. Out of the box it is a moa rifle with CCI ammo. I consider it one of my favorite rifle. It is just FUN to shoot.
I believe you will enjoy it as much a I do mine!

Son and I have matching 77/17 light barrel rifles. Accuracy between brands/bullet types is quite variable. At some point, I was buying ammo by the 10 box carton and got hold of some Hornady that turned out less than acceptable accuracy. It's all mixed together now and I haven't gone to the effort to shoot and sort lot numbers so I've been using from a carton of Winchester silver tipped which does well in my rifle.
