I would like to see a 5 shot Bisley 45 colt. Just put in the box, factory loads only. I think this gun could do alot. A 5 1/2" barrel would be nice, in blue and stainless.

Folks will push 5-shots hard too. You can say "factory only" but reloaders will do their thing. And like 6-shots, if they screw up they can still grenade a 5-shooter. That configuration really doesn't minimize potential lawsuits.

all joking aside i would go for a 50AE or 50GI at the right price just to have it.

people tend to forget that with a 5 shot 45. the GUN may handle more but the CASE is still the same.

5-shot 454s on Blackhawks are safe and durable....you just have to build them right. Here's one I converted back in '96 (I know I posted this picture many times before, but for those that haven't seen it):

Lee, I've always thought a 5-shot Super BlackHawk Hunter in .454 would sell like hotcakes!

But I've been wrong before.

Beautiful gun!

:D

I bet once you try it you gonna love it. As for 50AE, I was thinking for a while about BFR, despite it's size, and even thinking about my own Bisley grip for it. However, I did not go for it since that is rimless (actually rebated rim) cartridge in order to fit bolt slide for 44 magnum case on semiato pistols, that means no roll crimp to have a good grip on those bullets with crimp groove. In that respect, what I am thinking of is 1.285” long version of 500 S&W. However, better yet, new case could be created as rimmed version of 50AE. Some what was done with 45AR and later 45 Cowboy Special http://www.cowboy45special.com/cowboy45brass.html . In that case, same 50AE cylinder could be used for both rimmed and rimless rounds.

The 500 JRH is a much better choice in a wheelgun. As Onty noted, the 50 AE headspaces off the mouth. Roll crimping can be problematic and even taper crimps can cause headaches.

This is formally known as the .500 S&W Special.
Bowen, Clements and Huntington all chamber for this cartridge.

Either one, 500 JRH or .500 S&W Special will do it. My only wish is that cylinder is long enough to accept loaded round with something like this:

502440khp.jpg

Weights:

FP: 441 grains

HP: 414 grains

See more here http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=79627 .

Now, lunch this one at about 1000-1100 fps (this will make it equal in energy to heavy loaded 44), keep the barrel in right direction and bacon is secured. I can’t imagine better cartridge in something like 5.5-6.5” Bisley or SBH. And all that WELL bellow 30.000 CUP, most likely close to 25.000.

I would not be surprised to see somebody come out with a .500 special in a factory gun at 1000-1250 fps. Big holes. I like that idea.

Any chance we could all agree Ruger should have made a single-action Super Blackhawk in .480ruger. A nice big bore low pressure handgun for those that wanted one. If we keep wishing who knows. :D :D

The .327 doesn't do a whole lot for me, but a low pressure .50 caliber single action sure would be fun! Sledge hammer.

A Ruger single-action .500 Mag? No.

I'm not a masochist. And I prefer to keep my wrists unbroken and my forehead without a topstrap-shaped dent, thank you very much. If I need that much power I'll reach for a rifle or just load my 12-gauge with slugs.

.357, .44 Special and .45 (either Colt or ACP versions) will do anything with a handgun I need done. And I can still use my hands without pain afterward.

put me down for 1. i just didnt buy a .480 cause i dont like the size of the SRH.

What’s going on here? Why some folks suggesting to others how “dangerous” for shooters and “useless” are 480 an 500 in Bisley and SBH, and they are even raising their voices against production of such revolvers?

C’mon guys, if you do not like 480 and 500, stick with calibers of you choice and leave others to do what they want. None of 480 and 500 shooters will kick from the range folks with 357, so what’s the problem?

What’s going on here?
It is simple economics. Why would Ruger design/test/produce 10 (20?) 'special' guns for the guys that want these monsters? Doesn't make economic sense to a large company in my opinion. Therefore if you want one, you go the CUSTOM route.... Then you have one all your own, just the way you want it :) . As far as I saw, no one said they were 'dangerous' (to the shooter ;) ) nor useless. Just not 'practical' or 'needed' for any shooting on the North American continent and probably most other continents as well :) .

They'd sell more than 10 of those "monsters", but I agree the demand wouldn't warrant the redesign, testing, marketing, etc. If there was the demand some folks suggest, BFRs would be produced in much higher volume.

Nothing personal, but why some of you are so scared what those “monsters” are going to do to my wrists and forehead, declaring 480 and 500 in SBH and Bisley as a nonsense, just about urging Ruger not to go for those two calibers?

You are Lee absolutely right about economics and additional work and cost that will be involved. As for the smaller market at the present moment, you are right again. But with appropriate planning and right approach this could change considerably. I might be completely wrong here, however, if there is no investment, no profit to be made. I am too long in manufacturing industry and the main culprit in its downfall is milking existing technology without sufficient investment to keep it competitive. I’ll repeat; I did not see a single post asking for 327 (BTW, nothing wrong with it, it’s nice to have it on the market), but there is a long list of posts asking Ruger for 480 and 500 SA.

If Ruger was bold enough to compete with S&W starting production of SA revolvers, making first 44 Magnum SA revolver, why not to do the same and with new product at reasonable cost? Heck, I am willing to pay 50% more for 5.5-6.5 stainless Bisley in 480 or 500, but expecting higher quality. That mighty not be right approach for Ruger, but if they decide to stay at existing quality level, new SA 480 and 500 shouldn’t cost a single cent more than Bisley or BH combo in 45LC/45ACP. And at that price level, they will sell lot of them IMHO.

If the market would be small as some suggest why is it that every time the subject of a 5 shot 480 Bisley comes up there are hundreds of views & comments, its a hot topic every week.
Also, there really isn't any need to shoot them at top levels except during hunting season, etc. Most of us that have them shoot moderate loads & yet those big heavy, flat nose slugs work very, very well. A 350-400 gr slug at even 900 ft per second is amazing & the felt recoil is less than a 44 factory load.
I do believe that at some point Ruger will listen, there's just too much chatter every time this comes up for them to not be watching.
I've shown this before but here it is again, my custom 5 shot 480 Bisley by Alan Harton. I'm leaving tomorrow for our spring bear hunt, this 480 will be nestled down in my Barranti shoulder rig & stoked with 350 gr softnose cast slugs running about 1050 fps.

Here is my .500 Linebaugh 5 shot.

Good luck with the bears Dick.I just ordered a blank blade for my Bowen sight and I'm planning on making one of those ghost ring sights. It will probably have a smaller hole than the One Ragged Hole sights.

I agree with you there. I havnt owned anything bigger than a .44/.45 (never needed it) but have shot plenty of bigger bores. no matter what they put out there will be a couple of jacka$$es that will fill the case with powder, cram a bullet on top and wonder why there fingers are missing and the gun is peeled open. i have seen this with a .38 and an H&R 32 so it dosnt matter how big small the caliber is. ive seen some ruptures on 9mm semis also go through the shop.
as far as recoil i think people whatch to much TV. i have shot .454s and bigger and never been whacked in the face with a gun much less did backflips. even with a particularly nasty little 45-70 put out by magnum research.
however i dont think there will be alot of demand for a $3 a round gun and the guys that will pay that will have enough to have a custom built and reload.
maybe lipseys will order 2000 5 shots in something and get ruger going like they did with the .44 special.
as far as dangerous gun. thats just physics. you cant make a gun with a bore that dosnt leave any metal leftover to contain the pressure.

Short Barrel and sixshot; amazing work, congratulation. Regarding moderate, yet still powerful loads, this is whole idea. And for that, no need for 5 lb chunk of steel. Let hope that Ruger is listening…

You are right on, especially regarding irresponsible reloading. Once I found info that somebody managed to blowup Winchester M70 in 22 Hornet. It’s well proven that universe and human idiocy are unlimited.

As for special order from one of distributors, I think that is the best way to go. If I am not mistaken, minimum order is 500 units. Look what happened with special orders for SBH and Bisley Hunter models; 44 is now standard model, and 41 and 45 all gone. Same for stainless Bisley 5.5” in all calibers, few are for sale.

Anybody has connections with one of distributors?

Whoa now! Blowing up a M70 Winchester with a hornet? Really? :D I can see a piece of brass failing but not the rifle.. Any of you guys remember when one of the gun rags took a FA 454 and tried to blow it up? Best I remember they worked up to a compressed charge of Bullseye before they quit... The FA revolver did not blow up..

Ruger tested Old Army with full cylinder of Bullseye and lead ball on top of it ( http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m ... 8015/pg_2/ ) so I can imagine that FA 454 could take something similar, and than some. As for that M70 22 Hornet, it was posted, if I remembered correctly, on now closed shooters.com. Unfortunately, I did not remember all details. Without going into fine points, Hornet will take 7.3-7.4 gr of Bullseye and pressure must be way above 100 000 PSI. Standard ordnance steel 4140 has yield strength of about 98 000 PSI, tensile strength 148 000 PSI. Once pressure is above yield strength, no matter what is thickness, metal on weakest part will start to deform first. Apparently, good bolt action rifles are normally designed that in case of overload barrel is the first one to give up.

Back to topic; Short Barrel, can you please tell us your typical loads for 500 Linebaugh?

I'll guarantee you Short Barrel made those beautiful stocks, he is an amazing artist with anything he touches. I might be hunting Polar bears starting tomorrow, we got 4" of snow today & it was slick!! See everyone in about 10 days.

Dick
