An opportunity to purchase a Ruger Compact 308 wing safety was encountered today. The rifle is in mint condition (owners description) with a Redfield 3-12x44 on it. I know, I know why buy a compact and scope it like sniper rifle. Point is, offered to me for $550. Sounds like a good deal. I've got a Leupold 2-7x33 to put on it and can use the Redfield on a 223 coyote rifle. This price seems pretty good to me, even sans optics, but I have never bought a 77 before. I have fired friends rifles, sporters and one compact and do like them. I have been sort of looking for a compact in 7mm-08, but this one seems to good to pass up. What does anyone think? Good deal?

Not a great deal but you would not be getting screwed. If you did not have a use for the scope I would try to get the gun without the scope. Even though you have a use for the scope you might want to steer clear of Redfield. Unless it is current leupold production you will not be able to have the scope serviced if needed in the future.

Yeah, I know theres no support for the scope if its a problem, already tried to part it out of the deal, he said no. Redfields have always been pretty good scopes though so not too worried, might see it here in the classifieds, who knows? Thanks for the reply.

Fixing that scope would not be an issue. A friend has sent in two redfield scopes to a place for repair recently and they came back good as new. I will try to get the shop info if anyone is interested. They work on several brands.

Well I picked it up this afternoon for 500 even with sling, suede case, and 1/2 box of shells. The rifle and scope are absolutely mint condition. Will definitely swap scope out to save weight and trim lines, but the Redfield will stick around here too, nice varmint scope. Couldn't be happier, I'll work up some reduced loads this winter for my boys with old H4895 and wring it out this spring.

Thanks Mike, we were both happy, only problem is I really wanted a 7mm-08 so I guess I'll have to keep one eye open yet....I just don't see these Compacts around here much on the used market. I suppose that's really a good sign.

Doesn't Leupold own Redfield now? Warranty work won't be an issue with them.

Congrats on the new rifle.

Congrats on the new rifle.

They do but they state on their website that they will not offer warranty work on pre leupold redfields.
