Ruger #3 question

A question for the real experts, I found a Ruger #3 that has a schnabel fore end and no barrel band. I was informed that it was factory and not done aftermarket. Did Ruger ever do this at the factory?
Finally what is one of these worth in 22 hornet?

I suspect that your informant is simply wrong. If it was "done at the factory," it was done without Ruger's knowledge by an employee. MUCH more likely that it is a #1A Alex Henry forend taken off a #1A and put on the #3 (dead easy to do) or somebody made the original #3 forend into a schnabel (easy in theory, but involves hoggin' off a BUNCH of wood; I know because I've done a couple).

Don't pay extra for this unless he has proof it is factory work. Or you REALLY like the mod!

I did not buy it and have found out his reserve is 950. That seems mighty high to me. I thought that it may have been a special run that I have never seen, but it sounds like it is an after market add.

A real nice #3 in Hornet in original condition with the box etc MIGHT bring $650.

After market wood as you know is NOT a plus

This is NOT a factory rifle and is NOT worth $950 unless this is something you would have dome yourself and it would have cost more than $350 added on to the price for an original rifle.

I personally thinking passing on it , especially at that price was a wise decision.

Ruger has experimented with schnable forends. The one I can think of right now is a schnable forearm stock for a 96/22 or 96/44 lever action gun. But of course that one was built about a decade after the #3 was discontinued.
For the Number 3 there Ruger's normal date stamp would be in the forearm channel.
Here's the next thing...a standard #3 Carbine forearm has a barrel band at the front...this is just for aesthetics though as the forearm hanger is plenty to keep the forearm attached. I wonder if the gun you are looking at can get a shnable forend out of a standard #3 forearm?
I agree, sounds like somebody's played around with that one, but one never knows all the things Ruger has done. The important part would be getting a factory letter on it which might prove impossible even if Ruger did do the work.
