Ruger #3 Factory Mismarked Caliber Mistake?

Evening gentlemen.

Had a buddy call me last night.
Said he picked up a #3, factory stamped .22 Hornet caliber, at Cabela's.
It was used and he was told it came from a collection of #1s and #3s they had bought.

He got it home and said a Hornet was too small.
A .223 Remington will fit.
Did Ruger chamber the #3 in .223 Remington?
He says it doesn't look like the barrel has ever been pulled...

He's going to have a chamber cast done.

In the meantime, what does the local fountain of Ruger knowledge have to offer?

Same extractor for both calibers? I have no experience with#3s.

Also, what scope bases are supposed to be used for a #3?

The #3 was made in 223, but is much more likely to be a rechamber job. It "can" be done without removing the barrel, but lots more chance of not being straight.

I think he better discuss this with Cabelas and it means that they did not test fire or inspect it.........Bad JuJu................. :roll:

At least the Cabela's here doesn't do any test firing and very little inspection. Any repairs they send out for they do as a bare minimum and care nothing about having the actual proper parts used in a LOT of cases. They simply want the gun on their rack to sell. They also don't want to pay anything at all for the repair parts and bare minimum for the work.
