Robber's Roost is a cave up on a cliff in the Verde Valley, within sight of Sedona. It is off a fairly well maintained gravel road, but once you reach the turn-off to the trail head, you need ground clearance and 4x4 doesn't hurt.

The trail to the parking area. That's a Wrangler ahead of us.

At the trail head, looking across the canyon. If you look in the lower corner, you can see the trail to Robber's Roost.

Nice pics. Been a few years since I've been there.
Used to be a bit of old cable along the steep part of the trail to help you along.

The last bit, with one of the darkened footprints, and no cable.

As an interesting note, if you misstep here, it's about a 600 foot fall.

I think I read that the cable was there in the 1930's, way before my time.
I remember that spot right there. It's a really LOOOOONG way down.
Lot of history to Robbers Roost.

I take it that they could not take horses there ? I must have the "Hole in the Wall", on my mind. Love those western novels..!

Other than a book by Zane Grey, there is no evidence it was actually ever used as a hideout. There is evidence that one of the historical tribes, probably Sinagua, did use the cave at some point.
