Rock Salt

But it ain't the same as good old rock salt which has a tradition of its own.
Here's my next thought on this... why keep the cartridge with the rock salt loaded in the gun? I'm presuming this is to be used for four legged critters and not two (I do have a definite official internet lawyer opinion of why not to use rock salt on a totally bi-poded critter). Seems it you are going out to scare something away and possibly pepper it with the salt then the the time to load the gun is really not relative.
So I think the better alternative regardless of 'the critter' is to just well mark the cartridge and load it in when needed.... of course if you ever do fire it then there is a heck of a lot of cleaning that needs to be done.

Getting into details: there's the issue of the 'rock salt' getting damp and turning into a solid chunk which splits or damages the muzzle/choke when fired.

I can't remember rock salt coming up here. To us if you are going to shoot, feel it is a must then it is life and death and to put the threat down and out quickly and as safely to us as possible. No half way measure in a case of suffering serious bodily injury or death.
I believe this is actually the responses the OP really wanted based on reading his other posts.
And besides all that, I see no moral distinction between blinding, killing, or gravely injuring someone.....The very idea of using a load of rock salt against any living thing reminds me of a statement that I took from a murder suspect back when I was a Deputy Sheriff....Her rationale for being innocent of the death of her (now deceased) husband was because her intent was to "only shoot him a little bit"..LOL....what a dummy.

Well I can say that as kids we had a field we loved to ride our dirt bikes in. Problem is we had to ride alongside the property of a old crazy nut. He would stand by his falling apart barn (fence between us and him) and if out when we came by fire in the air to scare us I guess. Well that was our only way out also......one evening as we were riding past the barn we didn't see him but hear the two blast and I felt "something".......when we got to the street we stopped. I was on a DT175 and my tail light shattered, and rear of seat cover torn. My buddies XL185 had a torn seat cover and scratches on fender and tailight brace. I was first to go by and saw nothing but heard it. My bud on the XL185 was last through and said he didn't see anything. I'd say may 15 yds from the barn to where the trail was along the fence. That was rocksalt and he bragged to folks that's what we would get if we rode that trail to the field. Pellets would have done much more damage.
Rock salt for SD in my opinion would be a stupid choice unless at strangling distance.....may as well swing the barrel at them....or shoot the face? Either way wouldn't want to take the stand for firing rock salt at somebody. They surely are most likely going to survive.

I presumed or interpreted that the OP was not going to use the rock salt for self defense but to discourage critters of some sort or another... at least when I was growing up that was how it was described to be used... wild dogs or young buck's butts....
I do think my second idea is better to not keep the cartridge in the shot gun until needed.
The one time a guy shot at me with a shotgun I can guarantee you it was not loaded with rock salt... but he could have just been firing in the air... it was at night and my buddy and I had the peddle to the metal as we flew out of the driveway. No sign later that he had hit the car but we were about 75 yards away when he fired.

Hmmm. That gives me an idea for my breakfast eggs.
pepper corn makes me want to think pop corn... but then the good thing about Rock Salt is it will dissolve ... not pleasantly but still will go away and not require some digging around...
