Replacing Grip Frames

I'm wondering how much grief I can expect to swap out the grip frames on my Single-Six and 44 Mag Flattop. I was thinking a SS for the Single-Six and the Dragoon for the BH. Am I better of just to send them to Ruger?.......................................

Chief, I'm not sure they'll swap those for ya, but maybe some others have first-hand knowledge about that.

If you pick up the parts here, it's not really a hard job. Heck, even I can do it.

All mine get fitted and finished by Gallagher. I haven't the patience to do it myself. He does first class work! He's done 3 so far andhas another one of mine there now and another will head there shortly.

I'm not so worried about the Single-Six, it's the BH 50th or is all BHs and SBHs have a standard Mount/mating surface between the Cylinder Frame and Grip Frame, more or less....................................................

"more or less" is the key phrase. Yes, the screw holes match up quite well. The fit of the "ears", i.e. the two semi-circular tabs that set on both sides of the hammer are usually the spot that may require some "fitting".

I've swapped more grip frames than I can remember. Many were easy and a few were troublesome.

I noticed the XR3 frame on my BH had no ears, but Single-Six did. So should I just wack them off if I deceide to DIY?............................

'gate is referring to the two upper protuberances that contain the two upper attachment screws, one on either side of the hammer.

Those little inner dealies you're talking about that help align the grip frame onto the main frame get cut off all the time during swaps.

If you don't mind a small amount of metal proud on either side then it will likely be a fairly easy swap. If you want it to look and feel perfect it will probably take some fitting (or it just may not work.) I don't fit my gripframes when I change them, and I don't mind if they don't fit just right. If I was sure that I wasn't going to change it again and I really wanted it to look just right, then I would go ahead and fit the gripframe. There is also a chance that it will fit just right to start with and you won't have to do any fitting.
