Now on day 5 of a 2 day hospital stay
For hip replacement
I have watched the CARE channel till I’ve memorized the whole loop
Looked at every item on Shopruger, done PT until I was ready to confess
To things I haven’t even done yet, the fun never stops

Move around and continue the PT as much as possible.......you will not regret it.

Gee, another not so good hip replacement report? Maybe I wasn't as off base as I thought.
I'm at 4 months on my hip replacement. Ask me anything and I'll try to help. PM me if you don't feel good with posting for the world to see.

Sorry about that... when I was locked up in the hospital last April the only channel I could stand was TCM... and damn if every movie didn't have some guy smoking a cigar... I did not realize I was addicted.
Oh, I'm on day 7 of laying on my recliner at home after my fall... I can get up and move around but after about 10 minutes I'm done.... I've cut out all the pain meds but it has made for rough nights... very little sleep and now it seems besides having two broken vertebrae I have developed a shine split that hurts worse than my back.... looks like next week is the soonest I will even be able to consider going back to work....

I’m 5 months in on having my right hip replaced. The more you exercise it, faster bones adhere to titanium shaft, and cup in pelvis. Muscles will be sore for several weeks. Left hip was replaced 19 yrs. ago.

Blume, being so laid up this past week, make sure your leg pain is not a clot. Your situation would make you a prime candidate. Seriously, you probably have multiple factors for a deep vein thrombosis.

I had no PT. Just suggestion that I move as much as I could tolerate(more for reducing the chances of blood clots than for the hip). I'm still a long way from back to normal which is a big problem for me. I feel for you as coming into winter and slick snowy conditions at this point in your recovery would be an absolute no go for me.
Here's another problem that may be a factor later: Even though the surgery was successful, you may develop spinal issues due to inevitable changes in hip geometry due to the surgery. I have occasional serious pain apparently resulting from impinged nerves after the surgery. NO ONE told me this might happen until it started when I was able to be up and moving around. I'm well over 3 months post-surgery and yesterday a severe "twinge" stopped me in my tracks right here in my living room. Good thing I was inside when it hit me. This is NOT what I bought into but there's no going back.

Just remember, they don't do that PT just to make you miserable, there's a good reason for it. Follow what they tell you and get well soon.

PT vs no PT

Really, there was no expectations from my surgeon that I do more than a few simple movements and leg lifts to maintain circulation.
In my surgery there was no cutting of muscles, connective tissue, and such. They were on the other hand seriously stressed by the manipulation which caused all sorts of pain after 3-4 days that lasted maybe 10 days. The big concern seemed to be TOO MUCH movement which prevented those muscles from settling down and returning to their original position to hold the hip socket together.

Got off of full time oxygen yesterday, big improvement, thinking this walker would be a lot easier if I wasn't
naturally so clumsy. Glad I had the easy surgery, only 6 day hospital stay before home health. Sometimes
think I should have been a bit more careful with myself when I was younger. Had a tendency to overestimate
my ability!

Don't we all!
I hope you get better soon.
I'm 6 years into a new hip. Just had it xrayed and the doctor said it's just like new.

Good grief man, what were your expectations?
I would have come home same day if I wasn't 3.5 hours from home. Oxygen?????? Only during surgery(?) and certainly gone before leaving recovery.

My BIL got his hip replacement 4 weeks ago. Interestingly, he was born with one leg shorter than the other. They not only replace the hip but made his legs the same length. With in a couple of weeks he was walking regularly and was up to almost 4000 steps a day, now more than that. He's recovering quite nicely. His back was hurting for a while because of the way he'd walked all his life and the change made a difference but even that went away. Doing better than he's done for years. He's back to see the Dr. this week and still hasn't started PT. I'm thinking he'll do just fine with it. My understanding is that they want to give the surgery plenty of time to heal up before they start PT but walking is a whole different issue. You can do that all you want. More the better.

Within limits. My Dr said the same thing. When I went back and mentioned walking nearly a mile a day, they said to cut that back by at least 1/2. As I've said before, I don't think the Dr's take into consideration the lifestyle differences of their patients. Telling me to "do as much as I feel like" is likely far different than someone else.

Surgery risk was known to be high because of previous heart/lung issues
but avascular necrocis had advanced to the point of danger of bone collapse
tipping the risk/reward factor to surgery
