I bought a 98 Mauser rebarreld in .243 a few years ago. The previous owner had engraved his DLN just above the .243 stamp.
Should a gunsmith be able to polish it out without pulling the barrel?
Wish I could post pictures here.

Most likely the answer is yes, but I assume by your question you also wish to retain sharp and crisp ".243 calibre" marking, etc. In my experience, if your gunsmith uses power polishing equipment for this type of task you can likely do a better job yourself doing it by hand. I just finished working on an old Remington 721 where the previous owner had engraved some ID number above the serial number on the receiver. I used draw filing and hand polishing techniques (protect the close by lettering/numbers with masking tape until final polishing) to restore my rifle. A nice rust blue for finish, and no sign of the old engraved numbers.

It depends on how close to the lettering you wish to retain, and how deep the offending engraving marks - but in my experience it's a fairly easy and simple fix.
