I recently purchased a Redhawk SS from The Exchange on GunsAmerica. It was advertised as a NIB. When I received it I noticed it had scratches (like someone polished the surface on a buffing wheel) with buffing compound all over the revolver. Also, it has evidence that the cylinder was used (the marks left on the cylinder when it is revolved from firing). My two super blackhawks SS and blackhawk SS do not have these scratches and cylinder marks. I asked The Exchange about it and they tell me this IS a NIB revolver.

Does Ruger polish their Redhawks SS so that scratches are left or do they polish them like my super blackhawks SS and blackhawk SS revolvers (shiny SS with no scratches)? Also, is there cylinder tracks on a new Redhawk? My super blackhawks and blackhawk don't have cylinder marks.

Thanks.

The Exchange is located in Brookings, SD
I have visited that shop and bought guns from them. I have no reasons to complain about their service, they seem to be honest people.
That said, I saw a Redhawk SS 7.5" there last year. I looked at it and, with the shop owner's permission, dry fired it once. I don't remember any scratches or marks on the cylinder. I was thinking about, but didn't buy it because I wanted one with a shorter barrel.
I wonder if it was the same gun you later purchased. Sorry to hear about your problem.

I have never seen a factory SS revolver with a perfectly smooth finish. Most are brushed to give the guns a satin finish. Ruger test fires all it's guns before shipment which might explain the line on the cylinder. You should have the empty cartridge case included in the box that the gun came in. If you don't plan to use the gun and want it to look perfect, take it to a reliable gunsmith and have it buffed to your satisfaction. Use a tie wrap around the hammer and through the trigger guard to prevent cycling the action. Who knows? In 25 or 30 years someone may be willing to pay a premium for it.
IMO, it is a shame not to make use of such a fine gun.

I have a Vaquero with a "Bright Stainless" finish and there is a world of difference between the high polished SS finish and a Redhawk brushed finished. The brushed finish shows many fine scratches and most I have seen have a cylinder line. You might try some Mothers Mag polish if the finish really bothers you.
