Just purchased a 4" SS Redhawk and am looking at holster options. What are you RH owners using? I've never used a crossdraw but would like to try one. Galco's DAO looks promising but this is my first big bore DA revolver in a long time and a lot of new products are out there that I've never heard of.
What are your thoughts & opinions?

I agree with Chris, the Sourdough is great. I also have a El Paso Saddlery cross draw flap holster that is REAL nice.

I use a 'pancake'. Just make sure it has three belt slots (2 x 1) so it can be switched , stong-side or crossdraw.

I had a holster made by C. Rusty Sherrick. May want to check his website:

Rob at Simply Rugged is faster than lighting, you'll get it before you can hang up with him.

El Paso makes some SERIOUS stuff too!

The retention strap comes in handy for carrying crossdraw since the holster doesn't pull itself closed near as tight as it does when carrying strongside because you use the lower slot to have the cant. It also comes in handy if carrying it in a chest harness when you bend over. It also keeps it on the gun when not on your belt and your just moving it around or transporting or whatever. It comes off by removing one screw. Costs an extra 10 bucks I think.

Without the strap it would fall out in this pic. Ask my how I know ;)

Lets just say my Redhawk has tasted mud. Good thing it's a Ruger! Yup, sometimes an idiot strap is a good thing :D

My .45 Colt 4" Redhawk does very well in it's Simply Rugged holster. I have been real happy with quality.

Sounds like I need to give Rob a call. The retention strap does sound like a good idea.
Rick, where did you get those grips on your RH? I like'em.

I guess I didn't do the quote right....

The grips are from Badger Grips http://www.badgercustomgrips.com/ruger_pistol_grips.php

I talked to Jim and had him make these with more of a satin finish. I have used his grips on a number of my revolvers and really like them. He had some color laminates available that didn't show up on his site when I ordered these.

My usual load uses a RCBS .45-270-SAA that I cast out of Lyman #2. Before I bumped the charge of HS-6 up, it was averaging 1000 fps from this Redhawk. I haven't had a chance to run the current loads over my chrony yet, so I am not sure about velocity. However, these grips feel better than the original Hogue Bantams.

Sorry...not a 4".

Here's one I made for my son. "Forsythe-type" loop, so the holster can be attached/detached from the belt without stripping the belt.

Desgin allows certain retention without a retention strap. You can do a handstand and the gun won't fall out.

He did a forestry internship over the summer and carried it every day, plus the everyweekend use during school.

He wants me to add a flap to keep junk out as last year he had the gun tied up with pine needles, etc.

Pics are old, and it is quite a bit more worn now, but still very sturdy and serviceable.

Alas, for a 4" bbl gun you need a loop over the Forsythe strap to keep it from falling over the toe of the holster when the gun is jerked from the holster hard.

I would like to add that I got my sourdough Pancake for my Alaskan and my 4" Redhawk fits just as nicely in it.

For an inexpensive option, I use a Triple K....think it is a Lightning or something like that....got mine for 25 dollars new although retail is much higher. Turned out to be one of my favorite holsters. Hard to tell it is even there.

Clint,
I just also got a RH 4" .45LC and have been holster shoping. I saw this one at a local dealer and intend to get it my next trip over. I had the gun ( was shooting on their range) and the owner opened it so I could try it and it fit like a glove, not tight ( as most seem to be). I like the snap at the top and the cross-draw option. It was nice! He gave me a $70 OTD price. it was listed as for 4" RH or 4" S&W mod. 29

luvmyruger,

I have used his grips on a few of my revolvers and like them a lot.

BTW, my 4" .45LC SS Redhawk came mistakenly with a SRH/Alaskan manual. I'll bet they got shuffled around when people were looking at the guns on the tables at the show. I didn't notice it until I got home. Inside the manual was a plastic bag with a copper colored -looking pin. It was stapled to the warranty card. At first I thought it might be a replacement rear sight pin since it seems to drift out a bit when shot, but it's a bit longer and a tad bigger in diameter.. Does anyone know what this is. I'm wondering if it is a SRH/Alaskan part and not a RH part?

Sorry to high jack the thread but I just bought a Redhawk 357 and was looking at getting the Bianchi Cyclone. Then I came across this.

Two questions.
1) will either holster fit the 357. I am assuming they will. If not mistaken the gun frames are the same just different size holes drilled?

2) I have not heard to much about the Ruger made holster, the Ruger holster is half the price of the Bianchi. Is the Bianchi worth 2x the price? Unfortunately either holster won't get much use except at the range (Live in New Jersey :)

The pin is for when you tear down the gun. It tells you about it in the........owners manual :D

I'll check mine but I think they use the same manual for RH, SRH/Alaskans.

That's a nice looking holster, too. I might have considered it if I had seen it sooner. Cost is a wash as $70/delivered is what I paid for my Simply Rugged pancake.
