Redhawk grip frame conversion

What I have in mind is to have a gunsmith convert my Redhawk grip frame to where it is like a N frame Smith, to where a set of Hogue grips for a 629 would fit on it. I think the N frame Smith with Hogues are the best feeling large framed gun I ever shot, and would love it if my Redhawk felt the same way. I contacted Hamilton Bowen and they only do what is in their catalog. Anybody know of a reputable gunsmith that could tackle such a job?

I'll drag out one of each and see how the grip screws and frames line up. I've never tried that before, it's worth a look.

It would be a real pain to get the grip angle exactly the same so the grips would fit. Isn't the Redhawk frame thicker at the butt too? I came thisclose to sending a Super Red to Bowen for a GP44 conversion. That would allow the use of Hogue grips that actually fit a guys hand, instead of the ones made for the std Redhawk.

Me too! If I were to want something like that I would look for a 44 Mag Super Redhawk Alaskan and have Bowen do this for me:

If you talk to Bowen, try to compare the prices and if you can live with the GP100/Super Redhawk grip frame I would expect this is the easier conversion assuming you can get a 44 Mag Redhawk barrel to do the conversion which shouldn't be that hard.

On that note, here's another suggestion. Get the standard Redhawk barrel installed on your Super. If none of the off the shelf grips work for you, you can send the whole gun to Herrett's for custom fitting of whichever stock design you choose. It won't be cheap, over $300 but you will probably find that a set of custom fitted Ropers will be much more comfortable than anything Hogue ever made.

The result just might be the finest, big bore double action thumper ever devised!

Had Bowen make me a GP44 last year, it is the only "true" custom handgun that I have. I love it and cannot say enough good things about it. It is unbelievably fantastic.

Well worth every penny!
Mine was the "learner", the first one he tried.
Hopefully the process has gotten a bit smoother by now. He didn't enjoy getting the original barrel off the .454 Alaskan I sent him.
