Looking to get back into Bullseye shooting after a long hiatus. I have a Mark II that I used with a grip mount and a cheap Ultra Dot. It served me well back in the day (shot Expert) but I know there are better options available now. While I'd love to get an Aimpoint, I'm not going to spend that kind of money until I know I can still hit the paper. So, I'm probably looking at a Holosun. Is there a way to mount one without having to drill and tap?

Actually,, the UltraDot's & Burris dot optics are what many serious handgunners prefer. Holosun has a cult following among the "tacticool" bunch. They are good,, but over priced for what you get.
I see a LOT of different dot optics on my range among the USPSA shooters. Pretty much all brands.
And Burris has an excellent reputation for the reflex type,, and if you wish for a tube type,, I'd go back to UltraDot.

I've not had any reason to complain about Burris dot optics. I think I have 3 in use w/o any problems.

Mine is a MK III but i absolutely love this mount. Hated the rail as it put the dot far too high.
I guess I needed to be more specific. The mount is my first concern. But, I have a tapered barrel, which is not drilled and tapped, and has a pressed on front sight, so the only mounting point is the rear sight dove tail. Weigand looks like a good option, how difficult is it to remove the rear sight?

Sounds like you have one of the "Standard" models with fixed sights.
The removal of the rear sight is not hard. And if the front sight is in the view of the dot optics,, then the front blade can be removed as well.

I know this thread’s a few months old, but I love Ruger Marks in general and Mark II’s in particular, and I’ve tried almost every classic original and several current non-drill&tap options for mounting scopes and dot sights.
Here’s a dot mount for the Mark’s rear sight dovetail I’ve had great luck with, which came to $28.81 to my door, including shipping & tax:

This outfit ships from China, but they have a wide range of dot mounts for many different guns (Rossi R92 anyone? Huben GK1, Beretta 1301, Taurus revolver, TX22, KelTec P17, etc.), and covering up to _nine_ different dot footprints. The guy was extremely responsive to my email questions and requests, and the mounts arrived in about 6-7 days, IIRC. This was my experience in Nov. 2025, YMMV.
I love to buy American, but at $40-$70 per base, plus shipping and tax often, you can be into the price of an entire pistol pretty quickly. I haven’t tried any of their mounts for reciprocating slides, but the Marks don’t reciprocate, so there’s no real stress on the mount, and mine were nicely machined and installed easily.
Here’s a shot of one installed for a basic Crimson Trace on a Volquartsen 4.5” match-barrelled Mark IV upper:
