Looking for something to shoot 45 LC at that's loud , which ones have you had the best experience with , good products , webites , etc.... iam guessing some ring out louder than others ? I make mine. I have 8" cylinders. 2 ' length. Hang in trees. They make a good 150 yrd target swinging,,for my scoped SBH. My 3/8" plates hang from portable frames. Just right for .41, .45 BH's. Smaller 2x2, 2x4 blocks hanging. Go to a welding shop, ask for drop off pcs.
I'm not sure about how thick you need for 45 LC, what about getting some scrap pieces and experimenting? A lot would depend upon your own personal loads and the distances you normally shoot.
I wondered about the shape & size vs. the material in how they ring. I have a 1/4" thk. 20" dia. mild steel plate at 850 yds. & it rings like a church bell when hit by a 260,308 or similar. Higher velocity stuff punch holes in it but it still rings. It hangs on number 9 fence wire. I have another plate that is 3/8" thk. 15"x17" hanging from 5/16" log chain. It is sometimes hard to hear at 5 or 600 yds. I think its mild steel also, but not sure. Been thinking about buying a new target or having one cut, but just like the OP, I want it too really ring.
I'd go 3/8" AR500 or 1/2" plain rolled steel plate. My 3/8" rolled plate swingers have been "cupped" by hundreds of shots from 9mm and 38SP at 25 yards (or less).
The lighter plates will "ring" better but will be damaged quicker.

Different steel will have different sounds. How it hangs will also affect the sound. But,, SAFETY FIRST!!!! Mild steel may "ring" more,,, but will damage easier. As noted,, "cupping" happens,, and can cause a bullet to actually return towards the shooter. High velocity ammo can punch holes through mild stuff.
Harder steel can avoid these issues,, but may not make as much noise. I have found I prefer the harder stuff,,, and how you hang it can affect the "ring" you hear.

* Never use armor piercing (AP), steel core, steel jacket, 100% copper, or other hardened bullets. They will damage the target and may cause injury.
* Shoot steel targets straight on as possible
*We dont recommend shooting 50 BMG any closser than 400 yds.
* Never use BB's, pellets, or air soft, they do not have the force to splatter and will bounce back.
* Be aware that the bullet (lead splatter) may be hot. To reduce risk of fire, do not use in dry grass or vegetation. If you do, make sure there are no hot spots before you leave!
* Use Steel Targets at own risk, Shooting steel targets can be dangerous.
* Minimum pistol distance of 10 yds, Max. 1500 f.p.s lead ammo
* Minimum rifle distance of 100 yds, Max. 3000 f.p.s.
* If target becomes bent, cracked, or damaged in any way replace it.
* Do not weld or modify plate.
I have found that how the target is hung can also affect the "ring". Wire or chain hangers seem to "ring" better than flexible strap (like tire sidewall, bungee cords, etc) or a solid strap (metal). The targets that are bolted to a stand and are angled for deflection of spatter seem to have a "duller" sound to me.

I have bought some AR500 steel targets off ebay, Shooting Targets 7, and Quality Targets Inc. I like the targets from Quality Targets Inc. the best. http://qualitytargets.com/ Even though all three sources are the same thickness (3/8"), the targets from Quality Targets seem to ring longer and louder. For some reason, the paint seems to adhere to their steel better and stay on the targets longer. The targets from Shooting Targets 7 also don't seem as hard as the others. I have small pits in them from shooting 357 magnums at them from 15-25 yards. 30-30 rounds at 75 yards also pitted them.

We use a steel disk-harrow plate from an old discarded farm disk. have it hanging from a cross bar between two posts at the 400 yard range in our pasture that we use for a range. When hit by any rifle bullet we can clearly hear the gong from 400 yards, so you should hear it at shorter range with any bullet hit. Ypou should be able to find a scrap disk plate at most any junk yard or farm scrap pile.
Also, let me add, the disk plate has a hole in the middle for the bolt that fastened it to the disk harrow machine. When one of my shots does not sound a gong I am sure that my bullet was a bulls eye and the bullet must have gone through the hole. Other shooters sometime miss the plate at 400 yards but I do not admit any misses.

Like Ty says above, the good old cast iron frying pan, the big ones the Amish sell or have at the flea markets, LOUD and makes things interesting when the pan actually "returns fire".... :?

What I have found for best sound is to have minimum contact between the hanger and the hang hole in target steel. I use the shepherd hooks to hang my gongs from and radius the part of the hook to a slight point where the target hangs and also radius the contact area in the target hang hole.
