Okay folks, here it is. I got to thinking about a post I read somewhere (here?) about having a cylinder on a .45 Redhawk worked over so that you could use moon clips and .45 ACP's in it. That got me to thinking, which is always a bad thing. Of course I realize that with enough money you can do almost anything but that is not something I have to worry about, my budget doesn't allow experimenting to wildly. Anyway, I came up with a .44 mag Redhawk cylinder and am looking at having it reamed out to .45 ACP. That part isn't to hard, I guess. What I am wondering is the cost involved to have the cylinder machined to accept the full moon clips and who could do this type of work? I know that some would ask why I'd do this and the answer is just because. I shoot acp's in my Blackhawk so why not the Redhawk. I just think it would be fun.

I'm thinking, send off the pistol and extra cyclinder to be fit to the gun, then machine the extra cylinder for the above conversion. Is this practicle, or is this something that would be cheaper to just buy another pistol?

I believe you can have your 45 colt cylinder machined to accept 45 acp with a full moon clip and still chamber the 45 colt with or without moon clips. You don't have to have another cylinder. 8) 8)

All true; however, a dedicated .45 ACP cylinder should be more accurate because you eliminate the leap between the ACP case mouth and the start of the original LC throat.

Will it make enough difference to be worth it? Unknowable until you try it.

There's nothing that you can't have two cylinders set up for moon clips: one in ACP, the other in LC.

Thanks for the responses guys, very much appreciated. edlmann, I was thinking the same thing. I had a .45 ACP cylinder fit to my Blackhawk and it is very accurate. This is kind of one of those "why not" projects. That way I can "plink" with the .45 acp or use the .45 Colt for regular stuff. Just thought this would be fun to do if it don't cost to much. Money is always a consideration when working on a beer budget. :)

I think the ideal situation would be to have the whole 45 acp crane and cylinder assembly fit to the gun, otherwise it would be a problem to change just the cylinders. 8) 8)

Unless you have access to a pallet load of cheap ACP ammo and don't reload, I have to wonder why go to the trouble? The .45 ACP is a distant second place to what a .45LC can do....Mild to much wilder!

JMHO..
