I was really surprised some years ago when I discovered Steve Martin is an accomplished banjo player. I have always loved the sound of a banjo, I even went out and bought one some 20 years ago, but it takes some work and practice to learn to play one, which I did not do, and I gave it to my grandson. The only musical instrument that I ever picked up and became half way decent at is the harmonica. When I was around 11 years old my mom taught me a couple of tunes on one. Years ago I had bought one and later inherited my moms but I really didn't try to play. Then about a year ago at the age of 79 I decided to get serious and try to play and to my surprise it came fairly easy for me. You don't have to be able to read music, which I can't, you just start playing. I found it to be fun, relaxing, and I have enjoyed it a lot.

I find ukulele the same way. Not really good but pick out a tune and play it. Rewarding. (unless you have to listen to me learn it)

I can whistle better than most, but cannot play any instruments. Tried guitar and harmonica but it just didn’t click.

I've seen that video before. But I guess it's because I'm a hillbilly & "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" is a song I grew up with, clogging to, and in general, love.
I've known about Steve Martin & his banjo abilities for a long time.
But I will say,, everytime I hear that I think of (2) things. One,, they could have added Ricky Scaggs & Vince Gill to the line-up, and two,, it should have had some cloggers along with it.
Makes my clogging feet move a lot. I miss having a good place to go & square dance & clog a bit.

The Irish dancers are good,, but not exactly clogging. But the Irish dancing is steeped in history.
The Cripple Creek Cloggers,, more like what we used to do. EXCEPT,,, I was always a "free-style" clogger & not a "set-step" team type. When I had a team,, we were all free-stylers.
I'm not a surfer of you-boob or whatever,, but if you can find a video of "The Dixie Darlings" you will see better clogging.
Attached is an OLD picture of me in HS, doing a clogging demo for the "Sophomore Talent Show" with my dance partner at the time. I had recently won a clogging competition and it was discovered by the teacher putting on the show. She wanted me to perform,, so I did.

Not everyone who practices can play. I tried, It just never came together for me.

Yes,, for some things,, I did and still do wear shoes.
The sound of the taps,, when in rythem with the music is the way it should be. And I will admit that sometimes the tempo of the music is hard to keep up with.

I found it interesting. But I truly laughed when he said how hard it was for him, and caused hand cramps!
A little trivia about me. One of my favorite songs to clog to is "Jingle Bells" It's just fun. And my all time favorite is "Orange Blossom Special." Trying to keep up with Roy Clark on the fiddle in that one is a bit hard,, but great to me! Up & down in tempo to where as a dancer,, you can hit it hard,, and then get a breather,,, sorta,, then back to fast again!

Meh. Knew a guy who had never seen a hammered dulcimer before and was handed one and asked "Whaddayathink?" About two minutes later he was playing songs on it.
Have a friend who can't read music but can play anything that he hears on the piano. In college, he picked up the guitar. His roommate played trumpet and over the course of the the school year, he became a passable trumpet player. Funny thing is that he can't understand why other people can't do that.

Completely untrue. Three of my four kids play instruments. #3 has yet to find something he can't play from the beginning with exception of the flute. #4 plays flute in high school band, alto sax in jazz band, and will likely have to play some sort of saxophone in marching band this year due to the number of flutes and her ability to play multiple instruments.
But back to #3 ... plays baritone in marching band, euphonioum in concert band, and trombone in jazz band. Got him a trumpet (which play treble clef and the others are bass clef) with different tuning (low brass is B-flat and trumpets usually play concert C) and picked it right up. Handed him a guitar, picked it right up (and he is left handed as is my wife). He writes multi-part symphonic music on the PC at home. We probably have 25 instruments here. Oh, piano was easy for him to teach himself.
I can't play it (yet?) ... bought it for my wife because she though she wanted one. Market place score from a meth head moving out of the ghetto apartments near NCTC. Got him down to $80 from $150 (you can get a new one off Amazon like this for $200). The 5th string tuner was missing its knob, the banjo had be restrung but the bridge was not in the proper place and one of the strings was wrapped around the machine head the wrong direction. The resonator had a gouge in the wood, it was filthy, the handrest was missing, and it had no strap. I think I spent $30 or less on all that. Took FOREVER to put the new strings on.

My dad, though legally blind, could play anything he could pick up or sit down at. He bought my sister an oboe for HS band, which is a very difficult wood wind to play. In 15 minutes he was cranking out tunes like a pro. I never saw him play a banjo, although they were available to him. Always wondered why................

My kids' high school has only one oboe in inventory and it's at my house because my sophomore daughter is the only one that can play it and no one's checked it out before her in years.
I have and play a 6 string and 12 string guitar, a ukulele, a guitarlele, and a dulcimer. The dulcimer is the most difficult for me.
Love to hear a dulcimer!! For some reason I missed out on the musical abilities and singing. Can't carry a tune in a bucket! Tried to learn the guitar a few years ago, wound up giving my guitar to my girl friends daughter. Her dad was a guitarist/singer for Dr. Hook. Did I say a few years ago? Try 26 years ago! Where does time go?!!!
