Re Security/SpeedSix

Question- I currently own a GP 100 3" model. I am wondering dimension-wise how much smaller a Security or Speed Six (2 3/4 ") model would be in terms of size, weight, and comcealibility. Have tried to Google specs for the Sixes and can't really tell. Any advice is much appreciated.

Security / Service / Speed Six's are (roughly) the same size as the K Frame Smith and Wessons like their Models 10, 15, 64 and others ~ they use the same holsters too.

Think you can view the Six Series owners manuals on line at Rugers site ~ don't know if the actual measurements are there but it'd be a start.

There's more than just the slight dimensional differences.

The total feel is far apart between the two guns.

The GP's are the clunky Glocks of the revolver world, where the old Sixes are so suave. 8)

The 3" GP 100 with the old-style rosewood grips are without a doubt my favorite gun in terms of feel- perfect in terms of balance and grip. However, I can't picture me conceal carrying it. I came to the realization that I have nothing that really suits me if I had to actually carry a gun for whatever reason...that is why I am thinking of the Security/ Speed Sixes.

Maybe I am just fishing for an excuse to buy more guns...

Have you considered moving down in size to the SP101?

I'm not sure the difference in size and weight between the GP and the Six Series would be that noticable.

Thanks Hittman.. I think the SP 101 feels a bit small for me. I am beginning to think that you are 100% correct in that the difference between the GP100 and Security/Speed Sixes may not be great enough to make a difference.

In the late 80's early 90's I shot in PPC competitions where you shoot just about every course of fire DA (1st course was 12 shots in 20 seconds at 7 yards - B27 target). Most competitors shot modified S&W Model 10's (1" dia bull barrel, full rib sights that you can preset the front for 7, 15, 25 and 50 yds, trigger jobs, etc., etc.). I started out with a stock 6" GP100. The next year I built a comp gun from a GP100 (this was when you could get good PPC barrels through Brownells). Everyone laughed and said you build a PPC gun from a Smith because of the smoothness of the action. I then let them shoot mine. I'm proud to say their tune changed 180 degrees and they were impressed on how good the Ruger felt and shot. Sadly, I don't have that gun any more. The USAF sent me to Egypt for a year with a special team and I sold it to a teammate. I would actually like to rebuild one of my GP's into a PPC gun at some point in time.

To this day, because of that competition and training, I shoot my DA revolvers DA probably 90+% of the time because I am so used to doing so. Keeping the correct sight picture while squeezing the trigger just takes a lot of practice.

I like semi autos, they have a purpose in life, but I love DA revolvers, with the emphasis definitely being on the Six series and GP's from Ruger.
