A school system that refuses to allow a Marine to wear his dress blues at a convocation and only allows him to wear his uniform for graduation after it becomes public knowledge.

My Dad claims there should be a mandatory draft for those that disrespect those serving their country. In his words - let the <redacted> make it through basic and AIT then get shot at a few times to earn the right. I'm beginning to think he may be right and that school system from the Superintendent to the janitor put on the top of the list.

This guy worked hard enough to have his school credits a semester early.
This guy at 17 years old graduated Marine Boot camp.
The school insists wearing the uniform isn't an accomplishment enough to warrant being a good example to the other children.

Earth to West Ottawa High School... If the other students want to use this as an example to wear what they please... Tell them when they have earned their adulthood as this man has the exception will be considered!

My name is Selena and I am a ranter

They should send a small battalion in dress to attend the graduation, that would make school officials squirm!!!!

Oh how I love this! Make all the admins do 100 push-ups, 100 sit ups, and top that off with a one mile jog with a 60 lb pack on their back! Snicker!

My grandson is in the national guard and wore his dress uniform to high school graduation he did his basic the summer between grade 11 and 12 he is now an E5 looking for E6 soon.

The way I understand it, dress blues are considered “black tie” attire. Like wearing a tuxedo. I’m quite certain he was the best dressed person there. God bless him.

It’s also from 4 years ago.

Thanks for posting this. Because of this post I went on a google search and found out about military Stoles for high school graduates that are committed to a branch and ordered one for my nephew.

He should put on his Dress Blues Stand proud in front of everyone to behold.
We'll see if them cowards attempt to run him off in front of a crowd!
Standing Tall looking Good! US. Marine Corp. Do not back down make the authority show
there true colors for all to see. Just show em, Marine!

There is no draft today and the young man enlisted. I don't even know this young man and I'm proud of him. I'm proud that we still have people like him in our country.

It's a big commitment signing those enlistment papers. Technically, your life is no longer yours. You're theirs to do with as they wish. But if a guy is smart and eager he can make it what he wants it to be. I never regretted one single minute of my time.

He graduated Marine Basic and that makes him a Marine. In my book he can wear that uniform any place he wants to wear it. I don't know what a convocation is but what if he refused to wear a cap and gown. What would they do then?

I did look up "convocation" but it didn't exactly tell me what it had to do with a school. I've just never heard of it before.

Considering how many outlaw bikers are ex-military, the school is lucky the convocation wasn't attended by some Hells Angels wearing colors.

Hi,

My mother was in high school during the highest numbers of draft calls of WWII. She once told of graduations at her HS where there were military buses waiting on the grounds. The graduates would walk across the stage, get their diplomas, etc. like most graduations. Then most of the boys would give their parents anything they wanted them to keep, turn in their caps and gowns, and get on the buses for boot camp. We'll never know how many of them never made it back.

She, and most of her classmates, are gone now, but I'm thankful they don't have to see this kind of nonsense going on in the country they loved...

I've got a different take on things as well... I enlisted and served in Air Force Special Operations...then aircraft weapons maintenance...later commissioned and retired after 28 years combined service. I've been teaching in high school for almost nine years.

This young Marine, and God bless him for choosing to serve his Country in such a complete fashion, seems to make it all about himself. He did something of which his parents should be proud and now he wants everyone else to celebrate his accomplishment. FYI - Our graduating enlistees, included BMT grads, wear a red-white-and blue honors cord at graduation.

Draft those deemed unpatriotic? I remember hearing comments like this when I was a commander and all I could think was that the very last thing a highly professional, all volunteer military, needs are malcontents. Thanks, but no thanks.

Like I implied in my first post, I agree with Badger Matt... the event is about the group not one individual. We all should be proud of the young man for his commitment as I'm sure he is... but he should also know that it is not about him. We all tend to want to jump on the "what's this country coming to?" theme a little too quick at times....

Then again, there probably will be more than one young person at the convocation with purple or pink hair and rings hanging out of their noses....

Hi

Perhaps you're thinking of this young "lady": https://www.gonetrending.com/2021/04/12/high-school-salutatorian-shocks-everyone-by-being-unapologetically-goth/
