I'm posting this in The Lounge as an item of historical interest, so let's not make it political, ok?
Who was Rafi Eitan?
He was one of the fathers of Mossad, Israel's intelligence service. His wasn't exactly a household name, but if you were around in 1960, you might have seen the news when his team made the headlines of papers worldwide. They'd gone to Argentina, and captured Adolf Eichmann, one of the principals charged with organizing the Holocaust. Eichmann was taken back to Israel, where he was tried and executed a couple of years later.
I was just a kid, a couple of months shy of 10 years old at the time, but already I had seen pictures of the camps and knew a bit of what they represented. I could only touch on understanding the importance of capturing this man, but many years later, it became easy to realize that after what went on, it was necessary to continue the hunt for these WWII criminals as long as Mossad did.
As with so many of these guys who were instrumental in setting up modern day Israel, I'm sure Mr. Eitan led a double life, part good, part horribly dark and disguised. So I don't know if I should praise his work, but do thank him for doing it.
