Do the NEW fixed sight single sixes in blue have aluminum or steel grip frames? I had one of the high polish fixed sight ones, and it came with a steel frame and I prefer the weight and balance of the aluminum frame guns. I like the fixed sight models in blue if they have aluminum frames but will not bother if they are the heavier all steel construction.

Thanks in advance

I don't have a clue about the different gripframes of the NM you mentioned. However, I do know that many folks will gladly swap out aluminum gripframes for steel ones. Each person has their own preferrence when it comes to how a gun feels. So, if you get steel ones and want aluminum ones, offer a swap around here.

I'm not "up to snuff" on all the currently produced Single-Sixes, however, I'd bet that any gun with the "L" in it's catalog designation would be a steel, lock equipped model.

HOWEVER, I've NOT researched this and may be dead wrong.....

My favorite .22 LR shooters are "all stainless" versions!

I bought one of the new fixed sight single sixes when they first came out with the lock. It had an aluminum grip frame and ejector housing. I changed to steel ER and liked the balance better than the heavier stainless model I used to have. :)

The catalog states that an "L" is lock equipped.

And thankfully without locks, so far. My 2008 Single-Six KNR-5 is exactly like one I had in the Eighties except the grip wood and possibly even better stainless steel.

I don't care about the locks one way or another. It is out of sight, under the grips, and I simply pretend it is not there. For the life of me I fail to understand the objection to them.

Some people think the necessarily shorter mainspring and strut changes the feel and function. Maybe so. My thought is, I don't need it, wouldn't use it, so I don't want it there. That's why my Mark III no longer has a LCI or mag safety. The "lock" on it is just a hole and a screw, no big deal to leave as is.

I've never seen a blued 22 NM SS that didnt come stock without a aluminum grip frame and ej housing at least in a standard model. The 32 SS's came with blued grip frames and I'm not sure about the ej housings on them. I have two fixed sight NM SS's and have changed them both over to all steel. One a 6 1/2" I installed a NM XR3 steel grip frame and steel EJH, the other a 4 5/8" I used a XR3 RED short frame made for the 32 SS. For me the 6 1/2" gun is the optimum in handeling and the 4 5/8" isnt far behind. It would be interesting for someone to do a study of body size, weight, and hand size compared to gun size and grip and see if theres any sense in any of it.

The NR4-FL, blue, comes fitted with the aluminum grip frame but they are getting difficult to come by.

BNV-224-SI, case colored, is fitted with a blued steel grip frame

GKNR4F, stainless, is fitted with a stainless grip frame.

All I've seen have alminum alloy with or without lock. Did the gun you had have a lock?

My NR4 F (no lock) has an alum alloy grip frame and alum alloy ERH.
My BNV 224 SI has steel g frame and steel ERH.

No, the SS one I had was purchased before the locks. I don't care about the locks either way, but prefer the aluminum frame.

Thanks to all for your information

Davidson's has a few of the NR5 & 6 FLs left. Both are the fixed sight with alloy grip frames.

My observations have indicated a "Cowboy Action Shooting" class of mainspring in the Lock Equipped Ruger S.A.'s.

Fine for plinking but not so fine for "woods" carry. Out with the lock and in with a 25# spring.

Good point. I don't care for light springs either. If that is the case, then I would not like that; not for the lock itself, but for the weaker spring. One of the strong points that I LIKE about Ruger single actions is that they fire just about anything.

Is the spring seat changed to where you cannot put in a standard "lock free" strut, spring, and base plate? Or, can you just pop out the lock mess and replace with the non lock parts?

Thanks for that valid input

Louie

The gap is too wide for the standard spring seat, you'll need to fashion a new one of some kind.
