question on sr40

Ok, I've never owned a pistol before, shot and handled many, and decided I wanted to go for an sr from ruger. Was leaning towards a h&k p30l but at half the cost opted for the ruger. I've had range time with it and liked it.

I have two questions.

1. Has anyone filed or cutoff the left safety lever. It rides on my thumb when I shoot without gloves and created a not so nice blister.

2. On the back where the indicator for the striker is, has anyone ever painted it. I don't like that its black. I have some luminova compound and would like to apply that to it if it wouldnt cause any issues.

And that's it. Any advice or other threads you want to give would be greatly appreciated...

I don't see why painting the striker indicator, or at least just the end that you see, would change anything.

You can get aluminum striker indicators from galloway precision.

Thanks for the plug my friend. I think the polished striker indicators look and funcation far better than a painted unit. The paint peel with cleaner or oil and get down in the striker tube clogging the works up if your not careful. Should have the indicators back in stock again in a week or so. They sold VERY well, so well I ran out pretty quick.

On the shaving the safety off, just leave the inner ear, you can trim the outer off but leave the paddle part inside the frame. It retains the spring and plunger that acts as the detent for the safety.

I agree painting the striker tip isn't a good idea.
As far as removing or reshaping the safety because it has an issue with your thumb, I wouldn't recommend it. First it will affect the resale of your gun and secondly it could compromise the safe handling of the weapon and raise legal issues in the event of an accidental discharge. It is difficult to determine the cause without seeing, but I would suggest that you evaluate your grip. If it is your right thumb, try slightly curling it down at the first joint to clear the safety. If it is your left thumb, you are likely overlapping your right hand with it. Try griping with the left thumb parallel and below the right thumb on the side of the frame.

Interested in the polished striker, as for shaving the safety off we'll see after some more range time. Generally I. Like having a safety at all times. Try evaluating my grip a bit. Next up is ide like to see what else there is as far as sight options, but I'm sure I can search the forum for that info. Thx guys...

I am much more used to firing revolvers where a slide/safety isn't an issue, just need more pratice I guess...

I do know that I will probably take this apart and do some light polishing on a few areas, and be removing the mag dc. Might switch to a ss guide rod if they have one available...

Again... Galloway precision has them.

I LOVE the SS guide-rod in my SR40. makes the package seem more polished overall, and improved feeding quite well.
