I am considering purchasing a revolver for my wife...this will be her first...she has shot many rifles and shot guns but is a bit shy when it comes to handguns...I am thinking about a Ruger SP101...my question is, since I've not shot any of the SP101 options, which has the least recoil...the .327 Fed mag, the .357 mag, or the .38?...My wife is a girly-girl...and I don't want to get her something she won't want to train with...

I would think that the 38 will have the least recoil.

If you were to get a .357 you would have the option to shoot both 38 and .357.

One thing is for sure, an SP101 with full house .357 loads is pretty energetic in your hands.

My pick would be a .357....Train with .38 Spl target wadcutters and progress to +P or whatever she's comfortable with..
(Actually, a .38 WC isn't all that bad a defense round...JMO)

It's been said before. The best way to get a lady a satisfactory gun is to let her try a variety and choose the one she likes best. In that way, you can't miss.

Any other way, you'll risk wasting a lot of money for nothing. The only difference between guessing a woman's preferences and guessing the winning number in the lottery is that you stand a better chance of guessing the winning number in the lottery.

I may be worng, but I'll stick with my story.

For you, I'm sayin' the .38.
For her, I'm sayin' let her choose because you'll be damned if you do; damned if you don't.

You didn't say what for.... But if just a DA revolver for general use, the GP-100 would be much better option. Heavier (not as much recoil... more pleasant to shoot) and a longer sight radius for better shooting results. Also a better training revolver as you have adjustable sights. Then shoot .38s from it at your hearts content. No need to 'punish' your wife with Magnum loads :) . Another option in the .357 BH. My wife likes to shoot mine with .38 level loads.

My LCR357 is very soft shooting in 38 spec, even with +p. That big Hogue Tamer grip and the extra 4 oz really softens the recoil. She probably won't like 357 in the gun, but the magnum LCR with 38 spec would be a good choice.

It'll be for concealed carry...and if she decides to carry on her and not in her purse, she's got some hips, so the GP100 might be a bit large...I hadn't thought about the .357 LCR w/.38...I have a .38 LCR and love it...but it's too much for her...but 4 more oz might make the difference...
