Question about concealed hammer on SP101

Hello,

I am considering the SP101 357 with the concealed hammer and am wondering about its ability to shoot from inside a pocket. My understanding is that the hammer does expose itself somewhat during firing, so I am wondering how easy it might be for clothing or some other junk in a pocket to defeat the firing of a round?

Clothing could foul the hammer strike on a DAO SP101 fairly easily.

Not much of a chance at all, unless you plan on firing it while in your pocket.

The hammer doesn't have a spur, so it really wouldn't be affected any different than a spurred sp101.

The hammer fully "exposes itself" when it cycles DA to fire, so it's just as apt to snap down on pocket material as any other exposed hammer model. Sure, it's less apt to snag on the draw, but it's just as likely to misfire.

If you want an ENCLOSED hammer (or shrouded hammer) model, then the SP101 is not for you. The LCR is a shrouded hammer model, but less attractive - also much more light weight.

Thank you all for your insights. For some reason I thought the bobbed hammer on the SP101 was "fully" shrouded but after looking at pictures of it more closely it obviously isn't. You have confirmed that a hammer strike could be defeated by an outside obstruction.

I need to do some rethinking about what I want and why I want it.

I know this doesn't matter when lives are at risk but be careful firing a gun while it's in your pocket. The hot gases, especially from a .357, can damage your hide. They can also ignite some synthetic fabrics. I did some testing of pocket firing a number of years back. None of the coats survived a cylinder full and the nylon ones had to be hurriedly shucked. We probably should have had a fire extinguisher handy but stomping quickly put out the fires. Given the option I would advise drawing your weapon clear of the coat before engaging a bad chap.

I thought that if I would ever shoot it while concealed it would be from a coat pocket. I don't ever see myself carrying a revolver in a front pants pocket, just from a comfort point of view, nor do I ever see putting a revolver in a back pocket. Also, thinking about the closeness of side gas escaping from the chamber/forcing cone gap to "personal" areas near my front pants pocket, well, ah yeah you're right, let's just not ever shoot from the front pocket either.

ta daa, answered your own question, yes , the results are obvious,,,BUT that being said in the event of an attack upon you,don't let it hold you back, worry later.....mine is usually in one of my pockets these days, gave up on holsters long ago...... 8) :roll: :wink:
