Project P85

Hi,
I am not Berettapistols but am giving this a try.

I bought a P85 that is in bad shape.
Then I got a slide that was engraved a little.
Buffed the engraving back off. Not the best job but good for a first try I think.
Hope to get really started as soon as I get my sons car fixed. That is more important.

Check out the pics so far and feel free to post pointers or comments. There is one pic that shows some red medalions I just got from Ruger Prescott only has the red anymore and I'm not sure what they offer in Newport. I hope to inset these in some uncle mikes.

Thanks guys, for the encouragement. The weather should be pretty good this weekend (low 30's) so I should be able to finish my sons repairs and then I can focus on this more.

Morning Guys,
I got my sons car back together. It is safe and usable now. Maybe a little bad to some but for less than 100 bucks I think it came out good.



Now to the good stuff.

I installed the medallions in the uncle mike grips and they came out real good in my opinion. I still have to figure out away to keep them in place. I need to under cut the rubber a bit more so they don't work loose.

Transfered the other "good" parts from my donor kit and there you have it. Came out to be a little more than I first thought but still not too expensive.

Feedback and pointers still welcomed.

Looks good so far. I do like how you put the medallions into the new grips. Very slick.

Looks like there are still some spots where there dings in the frame, at least on the left side. Probably not much you can do about that unless you are willing to re-finish the gun.

how does it shoot?

I don't plan on recoating the frame so the nicks will just add character.

I still need to "tweak" a couple things before I shoot it. Also the only range around here is at the county park, outside. About 15 miles from home and with 2 little kids it is hard to get the OK to go "play".

My wife is real good to me don't get me wrong and I was tempted to bring it to work and hit the range after.

Someday for sure. It isn't going anywhere.

I look around on gunbroker for a 95 trigger but haven't found one cheap enough to make want t odo the mod.

The safety is like that on the old 85 and very early 89 units.

So I took it back apart last night to replaced the trigger spring. The tip of the pin was rusty. I also found some blue touchup liquid stuff I got out of my Dad's garage when cleaning it out. Didn't cover the nicks 100% but did tone them down a bit. The blueing stuff looks like it is from the 50's. One was from Sears and Roebuck and the other bottle is from Numrich which is still in business but this is old for sure.

I under cut the rubber some more for the medallions and think it will come out nice when finally installed. Ruger sent along some double sided tape rings for the install. The instructions say you have to let them cure for 72 hours.

I plan on doing all my uncle mike grips like this but may try to order different medallions from a revolver instead of the 22/45 auto units.

If I make big changes you know I will post it up.

This is turning into a fun hobby, too bad Dad is gone. I miss him a lot...

Great looking gun...Please post some target pics after you try it out. I'm curiuos as to how accurate those older ruger semi-autos are ?

Since you enjoyed redoing it so much you might want to check out "Gunsmithing Made Easy" by Bryce M Townsley. Some Walmarts carry it in the sporting goods section. Arguably the best $15.oo you'll spend on this hobby & and it will save you a 100 times that in time & aggravation.

The advice on hollow ground screw drivers alone is worth the price :wink:

I'd probobly use some clear RTV silicone under the emblems & push them flush & try to not use TOO MUCH to have it squeeze out & put masking tape over them till dry..
