Problem at the range today.

Perfect. My hero. Great idea.Shoot 2 or 3 in one hole, avoid hitting target with the rest. Let your conscience be your guide on what you say is the number of shots fired.
I was hoping for more tall tail stories (like mine) from the other members.
It has been a great day and I felt like posting something silly

When Patton was shooting in the Olympics they said he missed the target completely on the last shot. He claimed it went through the same hole but that's how the German judges called it, a total miss. They probably regretted it 30 years later.
I don't know about then, but now there is a second paper behind the target that moves slightly between each shot. No ifs, ands, or buts. 1 hole on the target, 2 holes on the paper, you hit the target.
My normal 'practice' procedure is to fire ONE shot at the 8" steel plate set at 350 yards. If I miss, I spend the day berating myself and try harder next day. If I hit, I offer myself the enjoyment of shooting again. I don't have anything against 'just shooting for the fun of it' but making that 'one shot' count has been a big deal for a long time.
Mobuck, I like it. I presume that 350 yard target is near by and takes very little time for you to go out and take the shot. For many getting to a range and such means we need to pack up all our gear and then fight traffic to get there and so we need to fire a few more than one round to make it worth our troubles. The contrast is for most days for me, my practice is to reach over to the side of my desk and pick the pistol up that has both a laser on the grip as well as one in the chamber and pick out a 'target' about 12ft away on the wall and pull the trigger and see how close I get.

I know this is practice with bench rest shooters, but did not know it was a practice in the Olympics.

You need somebody down range to patch the hole after every shot. That's how we did it in the USMC.
with my luck the 2nd target behind the primary one would move so that I put a round exactly through one of the previous holes.....
when I'm shooting at my gun club on the pistol range at 20 ft every once and a while I will put one thought the same hole... but it is usually an accident.
I just came from there where I did a quick test of this new 'pistol' I bought last month on a whim, which was in the long run really a poor use of my limited resources.... A Byrna non lethal pistol. I may do a separate post with a review of it sometime.

Olympics and other matches don't use paper and haven't for some time. I don't know the details but seen a displayed imagine and was told a computer shows shot placement. In my day in was backer targets. They saved my butt several times when others fired onto my target by accident.

That's exactly why the Marines are always looking for new recruits. Rapid fire is tough on target patchers!You need somebody down range to patch the hole after every shot. That's how we did it in the USMC.

It is not a second target but rather a roll of paper. The roll moves horizontally so shots are spaced out in a straight line.
