primers

Two of my reloading manuals state the brand of primers used and two of them say small and large rifle, small and large pistol and magnum.
Is there such a thing as primer comparison charts or is the brand I use really that critical?

Many reloading manuals have a primer comparison chart. I know Hornady & Sierra do.
Brands can make a difference. Use the size recommended for the caliber, and as always start at the low end of the charges & work up.

contender, thank you for the reply and while I have your ear I would like to tell you I did contact an Alliant tech. and he did confirm that what you told me back in Sept. 2016 was true, that a small charge of Bullseye in the long 327 case could cause a flash detonation across the surface of the the powder which could cause a pressure spike. I admitted to him that I was using 32 H and R data for the 327 cartridge. This had been suggested by someone on the forum. Anyway thank you for the safety concern at that time.

Wobbly, thanks for the infor about the 327. That is interesting. I reload more 327 than any other caliber.

As for the primer question, I'm not an expert, but I've consistently heard some primer brands are just harder than others. Like CCI being harder (requiring more force to detonate) than Federal for example.

I'm not sure about the strength of one primer brand being different from another in say small pistol. If there is I don't see it in my reloading, as I err torwards the lighter side. So if one primer is more powerful, I don't think I'd notice.

Just curious, what primers do you use in your 327? My manuals state small rifle primers, but others here use small pistol.

All my handguns are CCI. I like they have magus and non magum. For rifles I just use what the manual uses, but I think more important to pay attention to powder requirement.
