price check & questions: M77 MKII Stainless .223

Hello!

I have a line on a local Ruger Model 77 Mark II, vintage 2004. It looks to be in decent, but used, condition. Stainless (brushed/bright, not the matte grey of the new ones) with a synthetic stock (normal shaped) and a sporter barrel profile.

What should I pay, assuming 90% condition? Also, are there any specific problems for which I should inspect?

Any buying tips would be appreciated.

Should have the rings. Could have a heavy trigger. Check the barrel crown. Way overbuilt for the caliber. $450-$650 depending on how bad you want it. Check out the American in one of many variations so you can break-in the barrel yourself.

BTW - Asking price is $425.

Many minor handling marks (clearly not a safe queen). Definitely used, but overall in good shape.

My main concern is accuracy with the sporter barrel.

Id say thats a pretty good price as long as the metal isnt gouged up. Minor scuffs on the stainless are easy to take out. As for accuracy with a standard weight barrel , im betting it will do just fine! I just got back from a pdog shoot and actually had my farthest hit with a vanguard 223 and a standard 24" barrel. Beat out my heavy barrel 700 5R 223 and my XR-100 22-250. Might have been some luck involved on the long shot but it shot as good out to 350 yards regularly...it just heated up a bit sooner.

Every gun is different, but...

I own M77 MkII's, in .223 in both the sporter and varmint configuration. The sporter shoots so well that I never take the varmint model out of the safe.

That's a good price. It will have a 12" twist if that matters to you.

That's a major problem if you plan to shoot any bullet over about 55 gr or lead-free copper bullets even at that weight. Current Ruger .223 rifles have an 8" twist.

Bought mine used in 2014, manufactured in 2000. Bright stainless, laminate stock, 95+% (looks like new). It is a great rifle. Paid $476.

Things to be concerned about:

1. The twist rate is slow (1-12 or 1-14) with MKII rifles of that age so they don’t work well with heavy bullets. Planned to rebarrel to a faster twist but it shoots 40g V-MAX so well I’m leaving it as-is.

2. With small varmint-type cartridges you always have to wonder about barrel quality on used rifles of unknown history. Did a/the previous owner burn it out?


Worst case you will have a solid action and can rebarrel to a match quality barrel for the cost of many factory new rifles.
