No1 .45/70 price check.

Available for $1500 about 2 hour drive from me. Is this a good deal? No info on the scope.

With scope? I wouldn't call it a great deal, but it is priced at right about market, meaning it is not a bad deal. It looks like a good looking rifle and if you want that caliber... FWIW, dealer cost on the new guns is more than that.

IMO, the 45-70 is ideally suited in a No.1. I should have kept mine “as is”. If I could choose only one No.1, it would be in 45-70. 400gr bullets using loads specific for that rifle are nice.

S/n search says 2001! 25 years old.

The scope is nothing special, it’s actually a Thompson Center scope. Says Senaca Hawken etc on it.

The Ruger Number 1 in .45-70 is one my husband has always regretted not getting years ago. We both agree, an elegant weapon from a more civilized time.

Yep. I’ll contact the seller but I don’t expect anything. Probably should have got the .44 mag Redhawk I was saving for.

I sent the shop an email. I will contact Ruger tomorrow. It looks like the bracket (forend hanger?) that cracked off and was welded is part of the receiver. Sigh….

The only No.1 I ever owned was a 458 win mag back in the mid ‘80s. Had the most beautiful wood I have ever seen. I regret ever selling that one

I'll bet Ruger declines repair. That hanger is an integral part of the action repair would require replacement of the action. If that were some sort of warranty thing, they might replace the action. But they will probably touch after this repair, no matter what.

If the rifle is in good to excellent condition, and the bore is clean, I'd go get it.

$1500 is a solid, fair market price for a No. 1 in .45-70. It's not a bargain basement deal, but it's not overpaying.

They’ve been closed all week with no power internet or phone.

I called this morning, they are giving me a full refund in store credit.

I’m going tomorrow to return it and order a Redhawk with an extra $100 off. Then hopefully find something I can use with the remaining balance.

I really can’t complain, that’s fair of them. Frustrating part is the 2 hour drive and gas money. By the time the Redhawk comes in. 12 hours of driving and $60 in gas! . That’s life.

Somewhat heart broken over the rifle, it really is beautiful.

Could definitely have turned out a lot worse.

@eveled, I'd be interested in getting the shop info inquire whether they'd be interested in disposing of this at a discount. That part is non-structural, there's no evidence of overheating on structural areas, I'd be up for messing with it.

I was thinking the same thing but it’s not just the forend hanger.

There are 2 springs anchored on that piece. If it breaks off, the action will loose all integrity. Under recoil you will have the forend and both springs in one hand the recoiling rifle in the other.

Seems to me the action has already lost all integrity but maybe I’m more squeamish than other shooters.
The seller though ….. no loss of integrity there since he stepped up and did what’s right!

I’ve been looking for a used Redhawk locally for a few years, but never found the right deal. So I was going to order a new one with my store credit. But that meant another trip.

Yesterday a used Redhawk popped up at my LGS!

I returned the rifle and they gave me a full refund so I picked up the used Redhawk on my way home.

All things considered it all worked out good. Glad this is resolved Thanks again.

.45/70 Wall hanger.

Only modern firearm I've got displayed. Think the No.1 in .45/70 with the 26" barrel, Circassian walnut stock and high polish blue are just classic looking guns!

Couple of friends at Ruger NH helped me out with this one at the time.

Hate to burst anyone's bubble, but that weld is on every No. 1 I own and everyone I've ever seen, at least a couple of dozen. It's part of the manufacturing process and perfectly normal. Blued models are a bit harder to see the weld and it's more obvious on the stainless models.

I know how this happened. The Factory did it. I am wrong in thinking this was some sort of non factory process.

He is absolutely correct. I just checked my two rifles, and both have this weld, and it is a little harder to see on blued models as MIshooter says.

Been a few years since I rebarreled guns and not many No. 1's, a few. (counted the years on my fingers, just shy of 40 years) But I never noted this feature. Or maybe in 40 years, I just forgot about it.

They must make the action without the main spring hanger. Inteesting.
