If anyone doubts what the Democrats have done to Inflation, here is an example.

I own a few Pickup Trucks on our two ranches. I bought my first one for my first ranch in 1961. I just checked the record and that Dodge 1-ton Truck cost a total of $2945.

Then, along came Democrat Pres Johnson with his start of the massive Democrat Unconstitutional, Tax greedy Agencies and Programs. Every time I added a new truck to the ranches over the years, the price went up for each.

Yesterday I replaced a 17 year old Dodge D3500, 1-ton truck, with a new, 2016 RAM 3500HD. The total cost, after dealer discounts, trade-in, and negotiation reduction, came to $53,478.

The price has changed but the value to my business is still the same for each.

Yeah I remember when my Dad bought a new Chevy C-10 1/2 ton pickup, in 1970. It was a basic, stripped-down model - no radio, no a/c, 6 cyl., 3 speed on the column (you know, what a truck used to be before they became luxury cars with a bed  ). He paid less than $3000.

That's why I can't buy a new pickup. I just can't get past thinking they're worth $2500-3000. Being steady when it's a rising at a 45 degree angle ain't steady. I retired in 1992 with a pretty decent pension. Take a look at that chart. My retirement is becoming a joke because it doesn't stay with the rate of inflation. I'm lucky because my pension is indexed to inflation, but since the government keeps changing the package of goods that inflation is calculated with to hide the bad news I constantly lose ground. Lots of people are going to be in trouble, those that didn't prepare for their old age, bought a lot of toys and unnecessary stuff. They are going to be in a real bind.
It's government spending that's out of control. Look at it this way. When I was born $75 would buy what it takes $1900 now.
This chart is a measure of the collapse of our money. If that line continues to steepen we'll be in the same boat Venezuela is. Racial division, failing infrastructure, poor education, and ever decreasing buying power is a much more serious existential problem than terrorists or wars. So far there's been no effort whatsoever to control government spending. Look at what Obama has done to it in a mere seven years. Think this can go on forever? Think again.

I have owned more than a few vehicles over the years from $200 to $1000 that would last for years. You can't buy a piece of junk today for that. As a matter of fact, most guns cost way more than $200. I used to buy used Smiths and Rugers in the $200 neighborhood. Everything has went up but my wages. I can't go to the grocery without spending a hundred bucks, and walk out with two or three bags of groceries. It is ridiculous.

Will has a valid point. He mentions 1961, and President Johnson. If you look at the chart added by Jimbo, you can see it started upward in that time period. And once these agencies were in place, the inflation rate started it's sharp incline. It takes a little time, (on the grand scale) for such programs to take effect. But once they do, they get compounded.
Every time a "new" different agency is created by the government I always ask; "Where is the money going to come from to run this agency?" Look at "Homeland Security" and the billions spent there. Where does the money come from? TAXPAYERS!!!!!!!!

Sooner or later, things will collapse unless we CUT the spending.

The impressive yet invisible gap between 'price' and 'value' defies rational discussion in the news as well.

I bought a new 1969 VW bug with all the trimmings for $1980; gas was 25 cents a gallon. I launched into a major new career at a startling $700/month. Round steak was 49 cents a pound, while hamburger was 3#/$1. I could find decent places to rent from $65 to $150/month.

I managed to split my finger open on the job, badly enough stitches were required. Blue Cross tried to deny it was 'on the job' despite numerous witnesses.

Despite decades of propaganda, evidence does not support the notion fed.us.gov has provided much of a notion of 'value' for the 'price' it continues to extract from We the People.

I look at gun prices and values then and now.
This is useful...

I bought my first Ruger #1 in 1977 for $275.00. That is
equal to $1146.81 now

Aside from WWII,,, again, jimbos chart shows that things took off in the early 60's. As government grew, it fed upon itself.

Inflation is nothing more or less than the result of the buying power of our (fake) paper-dollars going down.
Once upon a time, paper dollars could readily be (and often were) exchanged for real silver dollars at any bank. That is because the paper dollars which we used back then were in fact, certificates which represented one dollar in silver coin.
As RW pointed out, that stopped during the (D)presidency of LBJ, or to be more precise, it was first instigated in 1965 when LBJ signed the Bill which ushered in the beginning of the end of silver money. Then a scant few years later, another Bill was signed by our then (R)President, Richard Nixon which effectively put a stop to the gold standard as well.
It didn't take long after all of that for inflation to begin in earnest, and it's happened just as the first chart posted by Jimbo illustrates. In other words, the gold and silver certificates which we once used as money had real value, so it didn't take many of them to buy something. By contrast, today's paper-FRN has no real value aside from the amount of debt it represents, which to date is what?..some 10-20 TRILLION dollars?...hence the 60-70 thousand dollar pick up truck.

Bottom line is that we've been robbed, and it wasn't a one-party endeavor. Fact is, many administrations have come 'n gone since then, both R's and D's, yet not a one has sought to do anything which would rectify the situation. In fact, both parties have done nothing but become willing co-conspirators in what will surely go down in history as the greatest theft (and the resulting enslavement) ever perpetuated against a People.

And all this time, you thought it's simply been a matter of balancing a budget so a debt could be re-paid, eh?   ......well, my question to anyone who really believes that is this:
Given that all of the gold coins (and certificates) which were stolen from our Grand Parents was transferred to the FED, and given that all of the silver coins (and certificates) which were stolen from you, I and our Parents was also transferred to the FED, and given that the debt owed to the FED is already valued in more dollars than has ever been known to even exist.....where do you plan to get the money from?.....'cause there aint any money, 'cause the FED has already stole it all.

And BTW, in today's world "balancing the budget" don't mean that we're suddenly going to operate with the money we have on hand, 'cause (again) we aint got any money. What it really means instead, is that if we try hard enough, we MIGHT find a way to NOT continue raising the debt-ceiling every couple of years. On the other hand, given that inflation never sleeps, the simple fact is that the continued use of our ever-devaluing FRN-dollar will prevent even that from becoming any sort of viable possibility. Leastways, not for long.

You guys chew on that a while, and then get back with me on which party has been the good guys in this scenario....because frankly, I haven't seen any difference in either.

I have been investing in Brass and Copper and Lead. :D

I was hoping someone could explain what causes inflation.
ETA Thanks DGW1949 for that lesson. I tend to think inflation is probably even more complicated than that. :D

And you would be right to think that.
All I did was provide the basic "why" relative to the "what" which your chart had already illustrated.

As you suggest, there's plenty of other stuff that could have been said too...
but hey, a post can't be but so long before folks loose interest. .
