So you got $40 a week. Taxes then were about 20%. So you netted $32. Gas at .25/gal., $4 would fill you up. Hamburger, fries and a Coke at Mels' for two, $1.50 with a tip.

That doesn't track across the country, AND it varies across different occupations (ag, industrial, service, etc.), AND state minimum wage does NOT have to match federal. Ag pays considerably less, as do restaurants, retail ....

Don't ASSUME everyone had your experience.
Start asking a few farm kids, or those that worked in ag, what they were paid back then.
We helped grow your food, not make your car, or work in a factory. A much better experience, IMHO.
Also, working those jobs, it made it easier to have a place to hunt, as the farmers got to know you, and how responsible you were with a firearm.

First job $1.65/hr. in Joske's camera department at Christmas. Manager didn't like me as I outsold her and her favorite clerk both. Let me go after Christmas even though I was top seller in the department. Moved me to toys at night. Four hours instead of eight. Not worth the drive for that. Barely worth it for eight hours really. But it gave me a resume! A big deal at 16.

As a kid I never worked a "real" job. No idea what minimum wage was. Babysitting was 1-2 bucks hr. Depending how rich they were. Throwing bales was so many cents a bale. All I know is the most I ever made in probably a 12 HR day was 32 bucks. Loading chemicals for a spray plane pilot was 6 bucks an hour but you worked like A fiend on still days and lounged around 1/2 days with no pay hoping the wind would die down and went home at 1 if it didn't. My checks said tool purchase on them. Or cash. I would hoe a row for a fixed amount at the fields of nursery plants. One I worked at a recreation center but that was even off the books $2 HR plus all the fountain pop and jelly donuts I wanted on shift plus a swimming pool use pass. Rural areas have a LOT of off the books jobs. I guess the big city boys had it different.
